What helped you form your opinion on illegal drugs the most?

Seriously though. I don't care if you think drugs are good or drugs are bad. I'm curious as to what influenced your opinion on drugs the most.

I chose "personal experience". Initially, I thought drugs were terrible and that even weed was absolutely dangerous. I think I got that from the DARE program and school and TV. Then in ninth grade I had a close friend who started smoking pot really often. I thought she was fucked for life. I even told a nice teacher that I was concerned about her. Over weed! I feel bad about that now. Then some other friends started smoking weed, and it didn't make them quite as stupid as I thought it was making the other friend. They still acted the same and made good grades. I watched them for a couple of years and they were still cool, so I tried pot. It was not nearly as a big a deal as I had imagined. Then I said, "Fuck it, I want to try them all". I don't know why. They didn't seem so bad once I had tried them. Friends trying lots of drugs and being "okay anyway" has made me try more, too. A close friend getting addicted to heroin & crack has made me very cautious about those drugs. Ultimately, I think the opinion I have now is largely from personal experience. I read articles about drugs, but I don't trust science much more than I trust myself. I'm going to die someday, if it's soon it'll be okay. I think I'm fairly smart about my drug use and I don't have a lot to worry about.

Watching the idiots that actually do them. Of course there is a chance that they are simply morons and drugs aren't a factor, but fuck it. I think drugs are stupid.

Most of it from close friends or associates, a lot from scientific data and most from common sense. I'm not really even talking about the "gateway" drugs like pot or mushrooms, I'm talking about the harder ones.

I think the most annoying thing to me about how people see drugs is the fact that many do not understand the difference in assorted drugs. Many people seem to think all drugs are bad, period. Well...I personally feel as if certain drugs are worse for you than others. Some have several positive side effects with few negative side effects, some have several negative side effects with few positive side effects. I also think it depends highly upon the user. I can take a quarter of mushrooms and talk to my mom. I can take acid and pass high school standardized tests. Some people smoke pot and fall in the floor shouting. It is all relative to the mindset of the user. I guess I would compare drugs to guns....in the hands of an intelligent informed user drugs can be a useful tool but in the hands of an idiot drug use can often turn bad.

I find that a lot of internet sites, this message board *******d, has made me feel that some "harder drugs" like acid and cocaine aren't as bad as they are made out to be. Having said that, I don't have a large inclination to go out and try them. Maybe in the right mind set with the right people at the right time.
