Christopher, if I make it out of tech hell in time on Saturday, we are seeing Monster, no ifs ands or buts.

And those nominations make me very happy.

Samantha Morton rocks my socks.

I just hope Holly Hunter gets the Oscar that she earned with her performance in 13. Other than that I don't even care.

I find it interesting to note that LOTR has 11 nods, but none of them are in acting.

I mean sure the digital stuff and music is all good and cool and doesnt let the story down by any means, but where the hell's the actor appreciation? If i were the actors, i'd show up to the oscars ala sportsfan, all in tshirts with one letter on each shirt and spell out FUCK YOU ACADEMY, or something equally constructive..

btw: 1000

Default Re: Oscar nominations

pretty fucking surprising nominations i thought.

i'll go through the categories now but i'll come back before the show once i've seen everything.

Best Picture

Lost in Translation
Seabiscuit
ROTK
Master and Commander
Mystic River

i've seen Lost in Translation and ROTK and Mystic River, and part of Seabiscuit. looks like i'll have to rent Seabiscuit now and catch Master and Commander. i didn't see Cold Mountain yet but on word of mouth i'm surprised it's not up. oh. my pick of the three i saw would be Lost in Translation. ROTK has too many awful parts, even if they comprise a small percentage of such a long movie. Mystic River is pretty good but overrated.

Actor

Johnny Depp (Pirates)
Ben Kingsley (House of Sand and Fog)
Jude Law (Cold Mountain)
Bill Murray (LiT)
Sean Penn (Mystic River)

man, Johnny Depp was a shock. they never nominate people in a role like that. i haven't seen House of Sand and Fog or Cold Mountain yet, but i'll tell you Sean Penn does not deserve this award, he was decent but yes, he overacts. Bill Murray was Bill Murray. this is not his best role by far, but i wouldn't be offended if they gave him the award because he's quite a talent. Johnny Depp was great, but it's hard to factor in comedic performance. we'll see about the other two.

Actress

Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider)
Diane Keaton (Something's Gotta Give)
Samantha Morton (In America)
Charlize Theron (Monster)
Naomi Watts (21 Grams)

well shit. i have seen none of these movies. pretty surprising nomination choice.

Supporting Actor

Alec Baldwin (The Cooler)
Benicio Del Toro (21 Grams)
Djimon Hounsou (In America)
Tim Robbins (Mystic River)
Ken Watanabe (Last Samurai)

Tim Robbins is the only one i've seen here. nuh. he was decent but i expect better from an oscar winner.

Supporting Actress

Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog)
Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April)
Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River)
Holly Hunter (thirteen)
Renee Zellweger (Cold Mountain)

Marcia Gay Harden was decent. nothing wrong with her performance. but it's the only one i've seen. i'll come back to this category in the future yeah...

Director

Fernando Meirelles (City of God)
Peter Jackson (ROTK)
Sofia Coppola (LiT)
Peter Weir (Master and Commander)
Clint Eastwood (Mystic RiveR)

the City of God nominations were a very nice surprise. it's confusing, it apparently wasn't an option for Foreign Language film but it was in other categories. they should have nominated it for best picture. Meirelles blows everyone else in this category away. i give Sofia Coppola second place and would still be mostly pleased if she won. third place, Mystic River, which wasn't fantastic direction-wise but was pretty good. i haven't seen Master and Commander yet. Peter Jackson's direction totally fucked up some parts of ROTK like i said before. SHARE THE LOAD. WIZARD OF OZ SEQUENCE. ENDINGS ENDINGS ENDINGS. anyway i will be unhappy if Jackson wins for this, the worst directed of the LOTR series.

Adapted Screenplay

American Splendor
City of God
ROTK
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

i haven't seen American Splendor yet. i expect it be good. Seabiscuit i haven't seen yet too. but i'm also expecting City of God to win this category for me, it was just fantastic storywise, and was written very very well for screen, very interesting and lacking in cliche.

Original Screenplay

The Barbarian Invasions
Dirty Pretty Things
Finding Nemo
In America
LiT

i've never even heard of The Barbarian Invasions. i haven't seen Dirty Pretty Things, i didn't expect its nomination, i need to see it still. Finding Nemo is decent but it's still warmed over Pixar crap. haven't seen In America yet. Lost in Translation was pretty good. it'll probably be between it and In America. if Finding Nemo wins this category i will eat a cookie in anger.

Animated Feature

Brother Bear
Nemo
The Triplets of Belleville

don't care.

but the acting sucks. i guess the direction sucking didn't stop them from nominating (and probably awarding) Jackson though.

- GO CITY OF GOD! WHOOOO!!!

- Film editing: This is one category LOTR should NOT win. If it wins in other ones, that's fine. The battle was edited nicely. The problem is editing is also pacing. If anyone sat through the last 30 minutes of that movie realizes they totally fucked up. Once again, GO CITY OF GOD, WHOOOOO!!!

visual effects: LOTR will and should win. Take out that fucking Master and Commander nom and throw in Matrix Revoultions. That climatic fight between Smith and Neo was my favourite piece of effects work all year. Stupid freakin Academy. "LETS NOMINATE ONE FILM FOR EVERYTHING, HORRAY!!!" Fuckers.

acting: Good to see Sean Astin didn't get a nom for supporting actor. If he did that would me homosexuality has completely consumed our culture. And Sean Penn? The dude is awesome but Mystic River was showy bullshit. watch the trailer with the "NOOOOOOOOOOOO"!! overhead shot. That's like a step beneath "MENDOZAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" from a McBain movie.

Indeed. They should at least be nominated, even if they don't win. That's just not right.

Especially the dude that played Gollum. If you've watched the extra stuff on TT DVD, you'd know why.

And complaining about the lack of LOTR acting noms is bullshit. Everyone involved was a fine actor, but if you nominate Sean Astin, Viggo gets shafted, if you nominate Viggo, then someone else gets shafted, etc. The bitching should be about there not being a "Best Ensemble Cast" or something along those lines at the Oscars. A lot of Critic's awards have them.
