Exclamation Clark wins New Hampshire!

Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, population 33, to be precise.

15 total votes cast; Clark got eight of them.

Clark Wins First Votes in N.H. Primary

By STEPHEN FROTHINGHAM, Associated Press Writer

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. - Wesley Clark (news - web sites) won the initial votes cast Tuesday morning in New Hampshire's Democratic presidential primary, the first to be counted in a state primary this year.

Clark had been the only major candidate to visit two of the state's smallest hamlets — Dixville Notch and Hart's Location — where residents cast and count their votes in the early minutes of Election Day.

Clark won Dixville with 8 votes. Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) had 3, Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) 2 and Howard Dean (news - web sites) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (news - web sites) 1 each. Clark received 6 votes in Hart's Location. Kerry had 5, Dean 3 and Edwards 2.

In balloting by Republicans, President Bush (news - web sites) running unopposed received 11 votes in Dixville and 13 in Hart's Location.

Clark was on hand in Dixville at the Balsams hotel as the ballots were counted minutes after midnight. "I'm very happy for the support here," said Clark, who is running third or fourth in statewide polls. "I'm very grateful to the people of New Hampshire. I'm looking forward to tomorrow (Tuesday)."

Officials and voters in both far northern towns had predicted the retired four-star general likely would be rewarded. "I'm predicting a win for the general," Michael Pearson, a Dixville Notch selectman, said before the vote.

There are no registered Democrats in Dixville Notch, population 33, and just five in Hart's Location, which has 39 residents. But state law allows independents to register with a party at the polling place and vote in its primary. Most of Dixville Notch's 16 independents and Hart's 14 were expected to vote in the Democratic primary.

Dixville marked a milestone, the first presidential primary since town patriarch Neil Tillotson died two years ago at 102.

Tillotson was the moderator at Town Meeting and owner of the Balsams and an adjacent latex factory. From 1960 to 2000, he marked midnight on his wristwatch and cast the first vote.

This year the hour was marked by Tillotson's son, Tom, the new moderator. The name of the first voter was drawn from a hat.

Arrow its good news to hear(as a Clark supporter).

but still, i'm hoping like crazy that the presidential primary system for both Democrats and Republicans is reformed one of these days, so that 2 different states each year take the turn of being the first states to vote, instead of effing Iowa and New Hampshire all the darned time. i'm very sick and tired of those 2 states always getting to vote first, while us Illinoians don't even get to cast a primary vote until way after BOTH super tuesdays are done(and when the primary winner may perhaps already had been chosen)!

That's the state of Illinois' fault. States do have the power to move up their primaries to an earlier date (which several states chose to do this year). (They do not, however, have the power to move it up before Iowa, since the rules/laws say that it will be the 1st in the nation.)

from December 29th...

Edwards gets 1st vote of 2004 NH Presidential Primary
College Student Votes Absentee for John Edwards on First day of Balloting

CONCORD, NH - At 8 am this morning, on the first day absentee ballots were available, Elizabeth Brown cast her vote in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary for John Edwards.

"I wanted to be the first one to vote, because our country needs real change and John Edwards is the one who can make that happen," said Elizabeth Brown, a freshman at Tulane University in New Orleans. "He’s different from the rest -- not a lifelong politician -- and we need someone who knows how to win tough fights. It’s what he’s been doing his whole life."

Elizabeth Brown, 18, is home in Concord for the holidays and will be returning to school in early January. This morning, Elizabeth went to the Concord City Clerk's office to request an absentee ballot and immediately filled it out with a vote for John Edwards.

"This is my first presidential election, and I think it is very important to vote for someone who has a positive vision and a serious, detailed plan for what he will do as president," said Elizabeth Brown.

In recent weeks, the Edwards campaign has received lots of enthusiastic, positive reaction. From a much talked about 60 Minutes segment to packed crowds at town hall meetings in Portsmouth and Manchester last week to hundreds of supporters signing on every week, the Edwards campaign is gaining momentum heading into the pivotal last month of the primary.
