this is a spinoff thread to a statement i just
does anyone actually take what is commonly considered to be "punk" music seriously? working at hot topic, i should know this -- every kid who thinks he/she is punk rock is a joke. honestly, when i think of modern-day "punk rock" i think things like the aislers set or umm obviously sarah records stuff or etc. i don't know. cheaply recorded pop songs with nothing but love for the music they're making eh |

Anyone who goes to hot topic isn't going to have a punk attitude, at least not the one you are talking about (D.I.Y).

the movement itself has morphed tremendously in the past two decades- as with any cutural movement, it began with a purpose and thrived on it (in this case, the shock factor was incorporated into all aspects of the community and it's beliefs towards sex, substances, art, politics, fashion, music, et all)- but the essential purpose behind it is rarely present today. be it because of pop culture exploitation, time and general societal shifts, the commercial influence on the music itself or whatever you choose to be the reason... if it is: it has become a form of nostalgia for those who are still thriving on it. and for those you speak of (aka they youthful hot topic bullshit buyers blah blah)- it's more of an adolescent need to be associated with a group labeled as different and anti- outcasted and angry. therein lies the contradiction- the underground punk movement progressed into a pop culture phenomenon- the youth of today perpetuates this phenomenon while thinking it still stands ground as being 'underground'.

Almost all puck music, and the people who listen to it, is considered a joke by me.
When I see these little goth kids, with their skateboards, and acting all cool...I cant help but laugh at them. |

and i don't like thinking that if you were to randomly pull aside a few of those kids and ask them what they stand for they wouldn't have a fucking clue what to say- but i don't doubt it's a reality.
somewhat unrelated but the kids i work with are consumed by what they're fed in the media. 50 Cent comes up everyfuckingday. they're excited about Torque. why? 'It's fun.' we're all becoming so stupid. yes, a generalization. obviously there are exceptions.

it's really sad to me that the ideology of punk and the music labeled as "punk" have become near polar opposites. you see these mall kids running around, and have to wonder what it is they think they're doing. are they emulating Good Charlotte? do they even know who Johnny Rotten is?
i bet these kids are all about The Butterfly Effect, too. |

i think it's pretty silly to define punk as an ideology in terms of fashion and music, which is merely a result, a byproduct of what punk is.
being punk to me means being minimalistic, youthfully energetic and youthfully mindless for the sake of being mindless. it means having an inborn hatred for macro economics. it's about hating people for pursing financial success simply because they're not enjoying 'they're not enjoying the real things in life, man.' It's mostly ill-thought out bullshit and when you start examining punk as a set of "ideals", you realize how dumb it is, and it become harder to understand how anyone who calls themselves punk could be over the age of 16. Although, in terms of music, it's a completely different thing. Art as a general should defy logic for the sake of pushing boundaries. If rock musicians stayed in the lines, everything would sound like Journey and Boston. The way Radiohead whacks that open E string in 'my iron lung'. That's punk. The way Jeff Beck plays that guitar solo on 'Looking for Another Pure Love'. Punk. Primus, while baffling good musicians, are punk as fuck. that's what i think. |

and the youth of today generally don't care what the fuck is going on, as long as they look cool.
and 'punk rock' is cool. cause mtv and avril say so. so off to the mall! and yeah to whoever said the thing about kids being consumed by today's media, it's not just kids though. people will consume whatever is fed to them, and its absolutely horrifying. the worst example i've seen of this, personally, is at my job. we put on Pirates of the caribbean. we sell 50 copies by time the movie is over. we put on S.W.A.T., but we have none in stock. at least 30 people ask for it and half of them get very angry that we don't have it for them to purchase. we put on an older movie, like Deep Impact the other day. at least 5 copies were sold after people asked about what movie it was. people are just dying to get their hands on whatever they see and its disgusting. |

i'll tell you about punk rock. punk rock is a word used by by dilettantes, and uh, and uh, heartless manipulators, about music ... that takes up the energies, and the bodies, and the hearts, and the souls, and the time, and the minds of young men who give what they have to it, and give everything they have to it.
and it's a, it's a term that's based on contempt. it's a term that's based on based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock 'n' roll. i don't know johnny rotten but, but, i'm sure, i'm sure, he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as sigmund freud did. you see, what, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise, is infact the brilliant music of a genius, myself. and that music is so powerful, that it's quite beyond my control and uh, when i'm in the grips of it i don't feel pleasure and i don't feel pain, i just feel no emotions. do you understand what i'm talking about? have you ever, have you ever felt like that, when you just, when you just, you couldn't feel anything and you don't want to either, you know, like that. do you understand what i'm saying sir? |

Post punk still exists, and it's almost as old as it. Take Interpol as an example, they have a lot of Joy Division's vibe.
