i think that the simple problem is that all along we've been eating far too many carbs for the way we live now. we may have used that much energy in our past, but the industrial revolution has allowed us all to become pretty lethargic.

look at the food guide:

http://diabeticgourmet.com/images/fo...-printable.gif

6 - 11 servings of high-carb foods? i think that's pretty rediculous unless you're getting a significant amount of exercise each day.

yep, my sister followed atkins and she's suddenly developed liver problems.

of course you will lose weight when you shock your system. that's why the first 10 pounds are so easy to lose. but you don't keep it off unless you've made a lifestyle change.

your body needs fiber to aid in the digestion of protein. atkins doesn't really allow for it.

Actually, the later stages of Atkins (not the first weeks) allow for carbs and fiber.

I'm on a high carb diet.

I call it the everything in one meal diet.

You're not supposed to stay on any of the methods for the first few months for very long. If you follow it exactly you can rock out without much of a health risk at all.

Hard to keep it off? Ugh, I've been eating a healthy serving PIZZA for 3 straight days and I haven't put a pound back on. Lifestyle change shmifestyle change. As long as you train yourself not to eat like a total lard-ass and your metabolism isn't absolutely dead you can keep it off quite easily.

You're only supposed to do the "shock" part of the diet for 2-3 weeks, and that's not long enough to screw up your liver. She was doing it wrong.
