Sure, they voted for it. So did every other senator except one. That thing got rammed through with no debate and no questioning, and John Ashcroft wasn't about to let anyone take the floor and ask what the ramifications would've been. It would have been political suicide at the time to NOT vote for it in the post-9/11 climate. Can you imagine the attack ads: "John Kerry said NO to fighting terrorism." Both have said they want it repealed now, which is what's important.

Edwards has strongly opposed measures by Attorney General John Ashcroft that undermine our civil liberties without increasing our security.

And Edwards wants to create an independent office of individual liberties.

And at the time the Patriot Act was passed (just a couple of days after 9/11), there were aspects of the Patriot Act that were essential (and still are)...such as the inter-agency stuff and whatnot. All of the Patriot Act is not bad.
