if you're an emotionless, detached, void human being, then, yes, big fish was a stupid movie
i can't believe that any person could go sit thru that movie and not feel an emotional connection |

that movie was really awful. the most stale thing ive seen in years. ewan mcgregor trying to sound like a hick, i cried but i had a different reason for crying than everyone else in the theatre.

These differences stem from my belief that there are two types of moviegoers (though the complaints manifest in different forms depending on the person and the movie).
There are those who go to be entertained, and there are those who go to feel. This isn't to say those who go to be entertained can't feel, it's that they're looking for different things from movies. I haven't seen Big Fish so I can't perfectly address it, but the basic idea is those who go to feel appreciate more nuanced movies. I've heard tremendously good things about Big Fish,... about 10% have complained, if not less. Well, whatever. Movie appreciation is extremely subjective, we all go to experience something else. Some of us look at acting in different ways, and as such, some people hate Ewan and others love him (I think the man is great, he's an excellent actor, though I can't comment on his Big Fish performance yet). Same with people like Jason Lee... I love the guy. He's not an a-list actor, he doesn't have any stellar qualities, but there's something about him, what he does with his characters that I simply love. Basically... arguing about movies is like arguing over art. Well, technically it's the same thing. I hate people who argue over visual art, judging it's worth, because neither will change their opinion and will only get more and more pissed off. I dunno, I'm kind of winding around here. Hmm. Meh. |

no i just think the movie sucked and i'm dissappointed that so many people seem to make a big deal about it. i'm really glad I don't care whether people on this message board like me or not, otherwise my life would be sad, probably much like yours. |

I just wanted to see it cuz Tim Burton is a cool visual director and I've liked Ewan McGreggor since Trainspotting. But if I hear any more "Forrest Gump" comparisions, I'm gonna pass cuz I really hate that flick.

Paycheck (2.5 Stars)- For the average escapism-craving Joe, “Paycheck” is a breezy way to forget about reality for two hours. The movie looks nice. Its freshly scrubbed stars, with their soap-opera faces and Barbie-doll bodies, are pleasing to the eyes. The violence is served up light, like an airy soufflé, and there’s a happy ending to induce smiles as viewers exit the theatre. In other words, it’s an innocuous film that can’t hurt you. However, longtime fans of John Woo, who have come to accept operatic, lead-slinging death dances as an integral part of the director’s powerful aesthetic, will probably be unsatisfied with this neutered variation on his earlier, superior works. |

Big Fish (4 Stars)- "Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so. After all, the sky flashes, the great sea yearns, we ourselves flash and yearn, and moreover my mother told me as a boy (repeatingly) 'Ever to confess you're bored means you have no Inner Resources.'" Dream Song #14, John Berryman Edward Bloom, the charismatic spinner of ripping yarns at the center of Tim Burton's wonderful new film, ranks among the most remarkable movie characters to appear in years. In attempting to provide a context and motive for his embellishments, reviewers have invoked everything from the southern tradition of tall tales, folk fables and Homer to ancient mythology but I think Berryman's poem hits the nail sufficiently close to the head. Born with inner resources to burn and understanding that most people's lives could use a dash or two of spice, Bloom regards it his gentlemanly duty to reinvent the world as a place richer in possibility, poetry and outright magic for their pleasure. As sort of a public service. |

I like how somewhere in between being Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney, he had his facial moles removed.
