Question Star Wars: Episodes 7, 8 & 9?

http://www.theforce.net/episode3/index.shtml#23010

Rob tells us that the December 2003 issue of the British movie mag HOTDOG has just hit the stands here in the U.S. and found several cool Star Wars related things. In particular, on page 12, here's this possibly amazing passage:

"No wonder Peter "Chewbacca" Mayhew is smiling. Not only has he been rescued from obscurity and given the chance to reprise his role as our Wookiee comrade for Episode III, but his contract also stipulates that he'd be required to appear in Episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Yes folks, seems there are actual whispers at Lucasfilm that the 'sequel' trilogy might be in the works..."

Please. Be. True. Of course, remember that the official word from Lucasfilm has been and is currently "no." We'll email them for a comment on the story and post any updates here.

Sounds like horseshit to me, its a British sci-fi mag, right above in the jouralistic spectrum of a British tabloid and we all know how accurate those can be. But could go either way, Lucas says no but the dude is a compulsive liar. And there has been one or two small hints dropped here and there. Sounds wierd that Mayhew is signed for sequel episodes, considering how Lucas personally OK'ed killing off Chewie in the "New Jedi Order: Vector Prime" novel.

wouldn't releasing more sequals destroy the whole expanded universe and lose a lot of fans?

there's been so many flaws in episodes I & II, i wouldn't be surprised if chewie stayed alive in 7,8, and 9. he messed up big with episodes I&II, and he'll probably continue to mess things up.

unless Lucas somehow magically makes it fit with the EU continuity, which he wouldn't, then yeah. And alot of prequel stuff has thrown out pass continunity, but god bless whoever runs the books and comics cuz they tried to make it fit as well as they could.

I like the idea of six films, it works better if you look at Star Wars being Vader's story. The only problem is ep. 6 ends just at the cusp of victory, you haven't seen the Republic or the Jedi Knights re-established. I also really like the idea of seeing Luke Skywalker becoming Obi-Wan Kenobi, it would add a nice sense of symetry the entire saga.

problem is: its overkill. Move on. Do other films. Ep 7,8 & 9 wouldn't be as dramatic to fill out the story as the prequels do to resonate with the OT. It would just seem like sequels and it would fall under the law of deminishing returns.

I remeber reading some debate on a star wars page and someone quoted on of the books and he was told something like only the movies are part of the real continuty. The books are kind of like an alternate inspired by the movies type of thing.

It would be like getting in a spiderman debate about who peter parkers first girlfriend was and someone saying "No I saw the movie, Maryjane was his first girlfrined and she did'nt die when she got droped of the bridge."

Plus like you said a ton of stuff in the books got destroyed by the prequels. Lucas dose'nt seem to care much about the books. I've heard authors say how surprised they were about how much Lucas would let them do in the books.

I gurantee that there will be a 7, 8, and 9 made. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but eventually, someone will try to make it happen, even if Lucas is not involved.

No, overkill is 20 minute Pod race sequences and watching films that you can say "ok, this will be a video game.. so will this.. oh man, the CGI there is terribly overdone..."

I personally would want 7-9, because maybe he's learned his lesson that the prequels are shit. Resonate with the OT?

The prequels (not to mention his "special editions") have served to ruin the original films for years.

Ep1 - Spy Kids in Space
Ep2 - The OC in Space
Ep3 - (just a guess) Sex in the City in Space

I’ve been hearing more and more rumors about another trilogy of STAR WARS films, and from fairly reliable sources. One licenser recently said they reupped their overall Lucasfilm deal for an additional ten years after EPISODE III’s release next year. They only make money during years there is some STAR WARS related in production or in release. That was an early indicator that this might be serious. Now, we’re hearing it from any number of places. And, yes, I know that all of this is still somewhat incidental, but it’s starting to add up.
For example, there was this letter today:

Hi Harry,

So my Hitchhiker's news smoked cock. I can dig it.

How about this:

Pacific Title employees working at Skywalker Ranch have just signed new contracts to run until 2012. Pacific Title are an optical and digital effects production company and the extended contacts are a carry over from their work on Episode II & III.

Hmmm. By 2012 you could probably make a whole new trilogy...

Gliddy McFlid.

Sure. You could. But that’s still just an assumption, right? It’s not like they’re actually crewing up for the films...
... are they?!

I’m sure all of you would love to sort this out, but I’m not sure even Lucas knows if there’s a concrete answer to this question yet. Will he make a sequel trilogy? Who knows? But it sure looks like he’s keeping his options open for now...

It'd be a hell of a capper to the series, instead of the re-establishment of the Jedi order, Luke just ends up sitting on the porch of old Retired Jedi's home bitter and shaking his lightsaber at people passing by badgering them constantly. "I blew up the Death Star, goddamnit, show your elders some respect!"
