Pop singer Mandy Moore suffered her second flop in six months with the teen tale Chasing Liberty which bowed in seventh with only $6.1M. Playing wide in 2,400 theaters, the Warner Bros. release averaged a pitiful $2,534 per location and failed to attract a sizable crowd of young females. Moore's last film, July's How to Deal, debuted to just $5.8M before sputtering to just $14.1M.

LOTR came in #1 again, despite original estimates yesterday that had Big Fish as #1. But it was close. ROTK now stands at lucky #13 of the highest grossing movies of all time right between Fellowship of the Ring and Attack of the Clones. anyway, just for kicks the top 20 were:

Because in the movie Mandy Moore is the daughter of the president who has secret service agents following her around all the time and her code name is LIBERTY. Then she drops off thier radar because apparently the secret service in this movie are run by a bunch of monkies. So while she's experimenting with her sexuality and growing up as a not girl or not yet a woman the secret service is looking for her. So they're CHASING LIBERTY! That works on so many levels!! Memento's got NOTHING on this level of sublety!

To be fair, How to Deal didn't flop because of Mandy Moore. It flopped because it was a stupid idea to make a movie out of two books that have nothing in common except the author.

I doubt most people paid attention to that movie long enough to realized it was based on any book, let alone two.

Man, that sucks. I feel your pain. Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are my favorite, and Queen of the Damned was a god awful attempt at making one movie out of The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned.
