Seven: 4.5/5 (Really great movie, well though-out ending and concept)
American Beauty: 5/5 (Every single thing about this I loved)
The Royal Tenenbaums: 2/5 (It didn't really have my kind of humor, plus I didn't like the main character(s))
High Fidelity: 3.5/5 (Pretty funny, plus getting all of the music references amused me)
Kids: 1.5/5 (This felt much less like a movie than say a documentary or something. That being said, if I was watching it as such, I would grade it higher, but I saw it as movie, in which all of the characters annoyed me to the point of wishing they all caught AIDS and died, and past the supposed shock value, didn't really have anything interesting at all. +.5 for the dick-swinging black kid)

Um,
The Royal Tenenbaums 5/5. I love this movie. Yay. I like Rushmore a tad more, but maybe even Bottle Rocket the best. I don't know. Great movie.
Return of the King 5/5 I don't know. I love it so much. Good. Wowza.
Bad Santa 1.5/5 Bleh. This movie wasn't for me. Haha, oh man, Santa just swore. Whoa! Haha, and in front of kids too! Holy cow.
Um,
Twelve Monkeys 2/5 I'm tempted to like any kind of time travelling, sci-fi, post apocolypse movie, but this one was really just cliche and in the end, hey, the Twelve Monkey gang and the whole movie doesn't even matter because it was all just that guy who you've only seen once earlier. Plus, Brad Pitt's performance annoyed the crap out of me.
Aliens 2.5/5 I don't know about this movie. I've seen it, like, maybe six times and I still just get so annoyed by it. Nowhere in the first Alien is there a plot gimmick that even came close to annoying me as much as, 'oh, they left the door open so now there's an alien inside'. That's just lazy ass writing if you ask me. Plus, the single alien in Alien hatched because whatshisname was right next to it and the alien saw him as a host. JC was just intent on making the movie his way, it felt like, and didn't respect the biology at all of the creature. Instead, he just made an action movie over the general idea of it. PS, the battle with the queen in the yellow robotic suit is mega sweet. 'Get away from her you bitch.' Good line.

i'm not trying to aviod spoilers, so look out for that.

magnolia - A - 4th or 5th viewing - partial viewing on specialty channel - earlier tonight - i didn't really "watch" this tonight per se, but i can't remember the actual 5th most recent movie i've seen for the life of me, so i'm including this. anyway it's a great movie. the opening sequence with the 3 stories and "one" playing over the intro of the characters (which is pretty much all i watched tonight) is simply fantastic. the performances are amazing across the board, with a slate great actors delivering as expected and the otherwise mediocre tom cruise giving what is probably a career best performance. can't reccomend it enough.

star trek: nemesis - C - first viewing - dvd - earlier tonight - it was ok. i think it breaks the even/odd rule for trek films, even if it didn't suck ass outright. the concept was acceptable, but the execution was way off. shinzon succeeded in certain respects, but was ultimately a dissapointment. the remans were one of the lamest badguy-races in trek history. instead of being menacing, shinny and the b'ys came across as bumbling idiots. the b-4 thing was horribly lame. still, i managed to enjoy it. the performances by the next-gen cast almost had me believing that shinzon was something more than a whiny little bitchboy. data's spock-esque death was an effective plot-tool, even if they didn't wait until the next film to reincarnate him in a childlike state (i know this is supposed to be the last one... but c'mon, the WoK/SfS parallels are too blatant not to expect at least one more tng movie).

lotr: return of the king - A+ - first viewing - theatre - monday past - wow! great movie. unlike the past 2 lotr films, i was happy with it right off the bat. i guess for the first time i didn't consider deviations from the book to be "errors" because the movie worked so well.

braindead/dead alive - B- - first viewing - specialty channel - sometime last week - me and some friends were flipping through channels late at night and found this just starting. at first we were critical, but before long we were laughing our asses off (i think the kung fu priest was the turning point).

the matrix: revolutions - B - first viewing - theatre - over a month ago - i know i've seen a bunch of movies on tv since this, i just can't remember which ones. it was a good movie but a disappointing final chapter to the matrix trilogy. i was satisfied when it was over, but that's about the highest praise i can afford it. in defense of the matrix: lotr, which it compares to less than favourably as a trilogy, was designed from the beginning as a trilogy and was filmed as such (nobody complained that the first two movies ended at points of high suspense, because they knew there was more to come), whereas the original matrix (whether the w-bros say so or not) was obviously intended to be able to stand on its own as a film. as a result, the sequels are quite good in that they do not tarnish the original by their mere existance like so many sequels before them have done.

i just remembered that i watched empire records and dungeons and dragons a few weeks ago with some friends, they were on at the same time (2-4:30 am) and i flipped back-and-forth between them so i guess they both count as my 5th most recent movie watched.

empire records - C+ - second viewing - regular tv channel - 2 weeks ago - decent teen-dramadie. nothing special, except maybe liv tyler in a fuzzy blue sweater.

dungeons and dragons - D- - second viewing - regular tv channel - 2 weeks ago - i love watching bad movies with other people, horrible adaptations of things you all love are especially fun to watch. it was a shithouse of a film, but i had a lot of fun watching and mocking it. i have to admit, though, that it really hurt me the first time i saw it (release day), i really wanted it to be good. actors that were too good for this movie *******: jeremy irons, thora birch, marlon wayans, jimmy from lois and clark, that hot mage chick who played that mousy bajoran ensign on two episodes of star trek voyager, and the guy who played the dwarf (who, as one friend put it, was "one hard-looking dwarf").

let's see....

The Last Samurai - C : Cinemetography is great. Beautiful movie to look at. The Japanese actors were solid (other than the Emperor). Unfortunately, I never bought into Tom Cruise as Algren and frankly I really didn't care too much about his character's evolution. There were also some plot / character developments that leaves you scratching your head.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - B : I think I would appreciate this movie more watching it at home. It is a long movie to sit through. The various 'endings' was a tad much in the theatres but I would probably appreciate it in the comfort of home. Gimli's little one-liners were annoying. Gollum purely evil in this one was dissapointing, the ending of the Pyre of Denethor was ridiculous. They should have cut the battle scenes & put in Sarumon's scenes & the Mouth of Sauron when the Black gates open. Shelob, Witch King were great. Can't wait for the Extended DVD which so far have been excellent for the previous 2 movies.

28 Days Later - C : Started well. Seeing the deserted City was really chilling. The main characters were well acted, well-paced. The movie goes completely downhill when they arrive at the Army camp.

on a sidenote the trailer for The Day after Tomorrow looks cool (reminds me of some scenes from A.I.) but it's from the same guys who made Independence Day so it will probably suck.

Peter Pan+++ 3.5 (Wonderful themepark feel to it. Quite alot of sexual tension for a bunch of 12 year olds. I was dissapointed the movie is completely incompatible with Hook. I don't really understand the ending either. All in all though, it made me feel like a kid again.)

Return of the King+++ 4.5 (By far my favorite in the series. I still don't have a great understanding of middle-earth so some of the plot went completely over my head. For instance, i have no idea what the significance of the ending was. The real hero of the movie is Sam. Now that is one noble hobbit.)

28 Days later+++ 3.5 (what In-Valid said. Before they got to the camp is was a movie that let you experience the hellish decay of the metropolis with the charactors. There was a sense of geniune mystery about what might be happening and what might happen. When they reached the camp the story stifled its own imagination, as well as the veiwers.)

Bad Boys 2+++ 0.5 (wasn't paying attention.)

I was subjected to all of these movies while visiting the family in New York. There were four kids under 6 years of age up there.

Pirates of the Caribbean: It's both sad and telling that it took a Disney vehicle to make Johnny Depp into both a superstar and a sex symbol, but so be it. The movie's slight, but I don't agree with people who say it's overlong; this was my third time seeing it and I've been engaged from start to finish all three times. B+

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: It was clever at times, but it had that Kevin Smith smugness I find insufferable. Nobody except Kevin Smith can make dick and fart jokes smug. D

Freaky Friday: Cute, but a bit too knowingly cloy at times, and unlike, say, Finding Nemo, it never really transcends its status as a kids' flick. Still, certain parts are hilarious, Jamie Lee Curtis does a fantastic job, and Lindsay Lohan will be amazingly hot in three years' time. B-

The Fast and the Furious: You know, this movie is so stupid, but for what it is it really isn't bad at all. The ending is fucking lazy as all hell, though. C

Wild Wild West: This is saved from an F solely by the fact that Salma Hayek is the hottest woman alive. D

Kangaroo Jack: Better than Gigli, I'd bet, but not by much. I thought I was going to kill someone. F

Ratrace: Oh, Christ. F

A+ i thorougly enjoyed it. of course a big part of such a high grade is because i can't help but put it in context with the other movies, which i think is more impressive than just on it's own
