Jean Charest

Was that about them not coming to Montreal because of the new smoking ban? I heard something about that on CBC Radio back in the summer.

Yep, Charest. He used to lead the federal Progressive Conservatives and when that wasn't getting him anywhere, he took over the Quebec Liberal Party cause that one had hope. Bring back the Parti Quebecois with their tuition freezes and social spending...

Yeah, we lost the Grand Prix cause our laws wouldn't allow cigarette advertising. I'm proud that the government didn't bow to corporate pressure and allow cigarette advertising after they banned it (they shouldn't have banned it and reduced our fucking access to good cultural events) but holy shit, they spent our tax dollars on funding the race instead of buying new MRI machines that the hospitals need... or... I don't know... INJECTING MONEY IN TO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SO THERE WOULDN'T BE A STRIKE?

I'm assuming that Montreal transit is owned and controlled by the City of Montreal, not the provincial government.

Actually, public transportation systems are owned by the provincial government, and it is up to them to fund them.

That doesn't sound like the actions of a traditional "conservative."

Wow, banning cigarette advertisements and then subsidizing the same things that those ads used to pay for with tax dollars? Liberal bullshit strikes again!

He was head of the federal conservative party for several years.
Then he moved to the provincial liberals.

He's a politician with no convictions.

As a former union worker in the grocery industry, I've experienced first hand why it's totally unneccesary in this line of work. I would disagree that my job requires no training as someone said earlier, but that's another point altogether. Under the union, I paid about $20 per month in dues, and recieved minimal benefits. Partial dental and partial optical, I think. My last collective agreement (before the store closed) gave me a 10 cent per hour raise. Following that store's closure, I started at a new store while I finished university. In the span of three years, I've gone from $7.20 per hour to $12 per hour in a non union situation, vs. going from $6.40 per hour to $8.10 per hour in a union shop (and paying union dues). While one might argue that my higher wage leads to an increase in food costs, I'd argue that the absense of a union allows my employer to ensure that only the fastest and most efficient staff is employed, thus lowering the overall wage cost. Oh, and I get better benefits in my non-union position than I did in the union shop. *shrug*

(Gurr8, if you've ever grocery shopped in downtown Peterborough, you've probably seen me. hah.)

Exactly. Why can't I speak as clearly as these people?

Giving money to people who don't need it doesn't sound conservative?

If you're talking about the No Frills, then damn you for not staying open five minutes later last night! I got there at 9:05 after spending way too much time on here...on second thought, damn netphoria.

Addictions should not develop this quickly.

Your grocery stores are named "No Frills" and "Price Chopper"?

Wow.

"No Frills" is the one that got me.

I shop at Ralph's, Henry's, Von's, or Albertson's. Seems like they're all named after people. Anyway, I guess the Price Chopper isn't bad, but "No Frills" sounds like a really shitty place to shop. I like frills.
