Default which of these sounds most promising?

40 E. 3rd
40 E. 3rd St., New York, NY, 10003; (212) 473-4638
Just off the Bowery, this stark, industrial space specializes in deconstructed cuts and bold hair color to match. At this two-chair "hair laboratory," there's none of the chaotic zoo atmosphere you find in larger, less personal establishments, just service with a smile and good, fierce hair.

ANTONIO PRIETO
25 W. 19th St., New York, NY, 10011; (212) 255-3741
Located in a brownstone, the Antonio Prieto salon makes every client -- from models to moms -- look and feel equally fab. The staff is hip and friendly, the music is better than at most clubs, and they have the fastest straightening technique we've seen. In the summer, get a pedicure in the garden.

ARROJO CUTLER
115 E. 57th St., New York, NY, 10022; (212) 308-3838
Hotshots from Bumble and Bumble seceded to establish this new salon. The no-frills service and architecture offset a staff dedicated to precision and creativity. They'll listen to your requests and use their vision to create a cut and color that your friends will call subtle and sophisticated. "Great hair!" is an odd compliment, but every client leaving seems to have just that.

BORJA COLOR STUDIO
118 E. 57th St., New York, NY, 10022; (212) 308-3232
When we first started going to Borja, she heeded our request for subtle, natural highlights -- just a few! Years later, she's feeding our lust for baby blond -- everywhere. Danka styles your tresses and Robin the make-up artist tends our brows, smacking us when we overtweeze.

BRAD JOHNS
693 Fifth Ave., 15th Fl., New York, NY, 10019; (212) 583-0034
The best blonder around, Johns determines your new color according to a formula that takes into account your natural coloring as well as your unnatural desires. You'll pay top dollar, but your hair will remain healthy. Stylists and makeup services are also available, and the soulful, energetic Johns designs gorgeous hair ornaments that are available for sale, along with his own hair and makeup products, on the first floor of this luxury duplex salon.

BRANNON HAIR
65 E. 3 St., New York, NY, 10003; (212) 995-2037
"I hate salons," says Brannon, owner of this unassuming space in an unassuming apartment building. This truly is an un-salon. From his uncluttered styling floor and lounge to his cutting style -- from the top of the scalp to the bottom rather than the traditional pivot-point method -- Brannon's cuts-and-color shop is a friendlier and less pricey alternative to its uptown counterparts.

CAMELLE BEAUTY SALON
328 E. 53rd St., New York, NY, 10012; (212) 758-1190
Little kids can celebrate their birthday while beauticians do their hair, makeup and nails. By the time the cake arrives, they'll look like little versions of daddy's girlfriend.

CHARLES LI
359 E. 19th Street, No.5E, New York, NY, 10009; (212) 979-7959
The budget-and style-conscious keep Li on speed-dial for his quick, cool cuts. He used to work out of his apartment which *******d complete use of the kitchen sink! Li now operates a full service salon in the whole building. Prices are the same at $25 for men and $30 for women.

DANDIE
100 Stanton St., New York, NY, 10002; (212) 598-4490
Seth and Wendy's neighborhood-oriented boutique salon is the latest to join the Velcro and mini-pocket set of the Lower East Side. Clean pastels deck the walls, Stereolab flows from the speakers, i-D, Flaunt and PAPER pack the reading racks. Seth, a spare-time painter, renders creative coloring, and Wendy, a part-time drummer, chops the mop with finesse.

DOP DOP
170 Mercer St., New York, NY, 10012; (212) 965-9540
Jo Blackwell, owner of this SoHo salon, is one of the premier colorists in the country.

EBONY 2000
831 Third Ave., 3rd floor, New York, NY, 10022; (212) 317-0343
If your hair needs texturizing or relaxing, Ebony 2000 is your one-stop shop for a funky new you.

EIJI
768 Madison Ave., 2nd fl., New York, NY, 10021; (212) 570-1151
Eiji Yamane's bustling salon is a godsend for those of us with wavy or curly hair suffering from too many wet Bozo cuts. His dry-cutting technique is a meditative dance, focusing on the natural flow and shape of the head, and it's won him believers like Bruce Springsteen and Yoko Ono. Eiji, who looks like your favorite Japanese metalhead, deftly clips and sculpts with bonsai-like precision for over an hour as you sit there, mesmerized, thinking, "Finally, someone who understands my weird hair!"

GERALD DECOCK
For information call, NY; (212) 675-4931
This man can give you the look of a rock star or a princess. His specialty is curly hair -- just ask Tracee Ellis Ross or Tatiana von Furstenberg.

GINGER ROSE
154 Bleecker St., New York, NY, 10014; (212) 677-6511
It doesn't get more hip-hop than this. Ease into your stylist's chair for a barbershop neck trim or some of the best braids and weaves around.

GLOW SALON
36 E. 23 St., 10th Fl., New York, NY, 10010; (212) 228-1822
Located on the top floor of a nondescript building, this bright, airy studio offers awesome cuts and color in a Wallpaper space without the accompanying attitude. Because it has only four chairs (all from the 60's, natch), you'll avoid the big-salon bustle.

HEART SALON
266 W. 25 St., Nwe York, NY, 10011; (212) 741-2934
Owner Tina Montalbano stresses that this is not your regular salon. They give rock 'n' roll dos, shag cuts and wild color. Sorry, no Working Girl cuts and perms. They also do gorgeous makeup.

HOTEL VENUS SALON
382 W. Broadway, New York, NY, 10012; (212) 966-4066
More style than Fashion Week. For supermodel realness, they can give you extensions no one will know are there and any cut and dye job you fancy. At the wig bar at Hotel Venus, the Big Easy's Alton on the Spot will customize any wig you wish. The banter between the stylists is priceless.

JIMMY PAUL AT GARREN NEW YORK HENRI BENDEL
712 Fifth Ave., New York, NY, 10036; (212) 841-9400
Although he's usually trotting around the globe, creating of-the-moment dos for the glossiest of glossies and the most celebrated of superstars, Paul does make regular pit stops at the Garren salon so that we mere mortals can have our share of good hair days, too. Be sure to book way in advance -- it'll be worth the wait.

JOHN MASTERS ORGANIC HAIRCARE
79 Sullivan St., New York, NY, 10013; (212) 343-9590
Besides a shiatsu scalp massage before every service, the real treats at this cutting and coloring salon are the homemade, all-natural, all-good shampoos, conditioners, treatments and styling aids. We're talking mango butter, lavender, organic olive oil -- "organic-based chemicals," as Masters will emphasize. "I don't want you to think we'll put a banana in your hair."

KIKKO IMPORTS
825 Sixth Ave., New York, NY, 10001; (212) 564-2693
Why go to Brooklyn to buy hair when there's Holly's? She has a vast, fashion- forward selection of wigs, extensions and braids, as well as hair products and accessories. Everything is high quality yet amazingly affordable. There's a lot of fun to be had in this tiny, jammed shop, and plenty of inspiration, too.

KROPPS AND BOBBERS
173 Orchard St., New York, NY, 10002; (212) 260-6992
We love this Lower East Side haunt for cuts, color, blow-dries and manicures. The quality of work turned out at this extremely informal salon is comparable to many of those chi-chi uptown glitter palaces, but at a fraction of the price. Even if your loyalties lie elsewhere, you should really try their products. The color conditioners are phenomenal, and the Smoothee Straightening Balm is miraculous.

LAICALE
129 Grand St., New York, NY, 10012; (212) 219-2424
This new Italy-based salon is fast becoming a downtown favorite. Is it the DJ spinning in the window? The superstylish staff? Or the monthly Laicale Insomnia events, where you can have your hair done until 1 a.m. while sipping smart drinks and getting your tarot cards read? Decide for yourself while enjoying an incredibly sexy scalp massage.

LIQUID HAIR DESIGN
280 W. 118th St., New York, NY, 10026
Hair guru Toyia is the genius behind the looks of music sensations Lady Luck and Ellie Ruiz. If you are looking to have your hair lengthened down to the ground, you've found the right place. They specialize in hair weaving and short cuts.

LISA MITCHELL SALON
90 Rivington St., New York, NY, 10002; (212) 982-0085
When she's not taming the tresses of top models on runways around the world, Lisa Mitchell is in residence in her glamorous Lower East Side salon. There she performs cuts, color and all kinds of brilliant hair extensions on an extensive clientele that *******s many top-drawer celebs. The best part of the Lisa Mitchell experience is the friendly, helpful attitude of the salon staff.

MARIO NICO SALON
266 W. 22nd St., New York, NY, 10011; (212) 727-8464
Relax in a plush, gilded seat, listen to Towa Tei and watch Jean-Louis David veteran Mario Nico Rentas snip and dye new life into your hair. Seating only six, Rentas' cozy salon emphasizes personalized service, not to mention hairstyling: Name a decade and he'll demonstrate how a few twists and pins can create your period-hair fantasy. No wonder his client list *******s lock stars like Donovan Leitch, Janeane Garofalo and Molly Ringwald.

MEDUSA SALON
177 Seventh Ave., Brooklyn, NY, 11215
Medusa has five stylists and they do it all, from yuppie highlights to a Manic Panic dye job.

MICHAEL FENN SALON
667 Ninth Ave., New York, NY, 10036; (212) 977-7838
Michael Justiniano does the hair of all the Broadway stars. He and partner Karen Dhang will cut, dye and set your hair while whispering sweet nothings about the names you only see in lights.

MOUSEY BROWN
144 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY, 11211; (718) 486-7971
Meredith Chesney, the owner of this 50's-style beauty parlor, will do you up real nice with a scalp-tingling rosemary oil special. ABBA vegan hair products are delightful and nourishing. They also have Heavy Duty hand cream, French bath oils and bubbles, and gorgeous and earth-friendly dyes, not to mention lace doilies and tablecloths.

MUDHONEY
148 Sullivan St., New York, NY, 10012; (212) 533-1160
Specializing in gorgeous dye jobs and rock cuts with lots of attitude, the five stylists here will talk about you when you leave. The torture equipment and pornographic stained glass are a plus. A new salon at 7 Bond Street will offer luxurious manicures, pedicures with paraffin dips and massages.

PARLOR
102 Ave. B, New York, NY, 10009; (212) 673-5520
Rather than sacrifice clients for the sake of high-profile editorial work, Parlor's stylists are devoted to realistic beauty, whether it's high-quality, versatile haircuts (curly-haired customers are among Parlor's most loyal) or warm, buttery, low-maintenance hair color. Now with more spacious digs, complete with garden.

PATRICIA FIELD SALON AND WIG BAR
10 E. 8th St., New York, NY, 10012; (212) 598-0395
More style than Fashion Week. For supermodel realness, they can give you extensions no one will know are there and any cut and dye job you fancy. At the wig bar at Hotel Venus, the Big Easy's Alton on the Spot will customize any wig you wish. The banter between the stylists is priceless.

PIERRE MICHEL
131 E. 57 St., New York, NY, 10022; (212) 755-9500
It may not be the most PAPER of salons, but we love that they open by appointment at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays -- perfect for that last-minute blowout before your 9 a.m. job interview uptown.

PRIVE SALON
310 W. Broadway, New York, NY, 10012; (212) 274-8888
Hollywood stylist to the stars ******t D. has opened a New York branch of his famous salon, next to the SoHo Grand. In a beautiful, elegant but unpretentious atmosphere, ******t or one of his nine stylists will give you an excellent coif and color. You can also get a manicure or pedicure, or work with a makeup artist to tame those brows. ******t, who numbers Gwyneth Paltrow and Sharon Stone among his clients, can make you beautiful in a short time without too much fuss.

RED SALON
323 W. 11th St., New York, NY, 10011; (212) 924-1444
One of the few places where we trust the stylist to do as he sees fit. Owner/master coiffeur Brad -- the man behind Luscious Jackson's look -- is always around, making sure your 'do is done right. The cozy, contemporary atmosphere is a refreshing change from the chop shops you may be used to. Haircuts range from $75 to $100.

SALON AKS
694 Madison Ave., New York, NY, 10021; (212) 888-0707
Fierce, fabulous hair and family vibes are what this salon's all about. Alain Pinon (co-owner with Susanna Romano and Kao Hui) individualizes each client's ‘do with cutting-edge haircuts that never tire. Styling tips are divulged throughout your blow-dry. Kathleen gives summery highlights.

SALON SEVEN
110 E. 7th St., 677-7399, New York, NY, 10009; (212) 677-7399
The juxtaposition of streamlined 50's furniture and modern African art give the client a glimpse into Salon Seven's hair design philosophy. The precision and softness and the architecture and movement of cut and color are about variations on a theme -- not unlike jazz.

SALVADOR CALVANO STUDIO
410 W. 14th St. penthouse, New York, NY, 10014; (212) 645-8333
This cavernous yet intimate loft on the edge of the meat-packing district has been a photo gallery, a studio space for fashion shoots, even a backdrop for a flamenco guitar instructional video. But most important, the vintage-furnished space is a casual, inviting place to get an impeccable haircut and genuinely warm service.

SOON SALON
318 E. 11th St., New York, NY, 10003; (212) 260-4423
Part space-age sleek, part Provençal, this incarnation of the beautifying half of Norfolk Street's minimalist thrift shop/cafe/salon Tonic still prides itself on the same thorough consultations and great cuts and color Tonic was known for, albeit in a quieter, cozier white space.

SPACE
155 Ave. of the Americas, New York, NY, 10013; (212) 647-8588
The staff at this beautifully designed downtown, um, space, is uniformly groovy -- you'll be asking everyone where they got their shoes over the din of dryers. Great cuts, long-lasting blowouts and the best manicurist downtown: Ceia Creme. The shy Brazilian artfully treats your fingers and toes like tiny canvases.

STEPHEN KNOLL
625 Madison Ave., New York, NY, 10022; (212) 421-0100
He may cut the hair of all the fancy uptown ladies and supermodels, but the sweet Stephen Knoll also trims and transforms such downtown hussies as Joey Arias, Raven-O and ****** Ezersky. You're in good hands with any of the cool stylists and colorists here, not to mention the great manicurists.

SUITE 303
Chelsea Hotel, 222 W. 23rd St., New York, NY, 10011; (212) 633-1011
For the past year, April, Armando and the fabulous crew in room 303 of the Chelsea Hotel have been making us look and feel like stars, which makes sense considering many of Suite's clients are the upper echelon of the entertainment and fashion worlds. Lucky for us this dynamic salon, outfitted with flowers, funky furniture, chill mood music, a balcony and a cozy kitchen for clients to have "a fucking cup of coffee," warmly welcomes all. What's more, the services are superb. From Armando's creative coloring to April's magnificent scalp treatment (my head was tingling hours after I left), you'll be nothing but satisfied.

THE STYLING HOUSE
12A Pell St., New York, NY, 10013; (212) 608-2588
Located on what is perhaps the city's most cramped block, the Styling House is not your standard bargain-basement Chinatown salon. Three Tuesdays a month, Clairol tests new Asian hair-color products gratis. But to take advantage of the freebie -- as hordes of stylish twentysomething regulars do -- book at least a week in advance.

VEGA NYC
36 W. 17th St., 4th fl., New York, NY, 10011; (212) 366-1792
Creighton -- formerly of Bumble and Bumble and the Hamptons Beauty Bus -- works his hair magic in this huge new comfortable space that's big enough for any entourage, though there are private rooms, if you must. When not doing fashion-mag editorials, Creighton and stylist Lindsay cater to a celebrity and style crowd, cutting and coloring without attitude. Manicures are available as well. Prices are reasonable, too.

WARREN-TRICOMI SALON
16 W. 57th St., 4th fl., New York, NY, 10019; (212) 262-8899
The Moroccan decor, pounding music and beautiful patrons make this gigantor salon feel like Warren Tricomi's personal harem. Celebs and mortals jockey for the colorists and Tricomi himself, whose 20 years of experience and ability to read your personality give him the edge over most brand-name stylists.

yeah, i was thinking of going there, seriously. apparently their prices are pretty reasonable, but they're also known for their art mullets. i don't want an art mullet, but i do want something crazy and fun.

An art mullet could be crazy and fun, so long as you get rid of it after five minutes.
