Default Hooking DSL to 3 computers

My roomates and I wanna get DSL. Does anyone else have it hooked up where more than one computer can use the same connection? I'm not entirely sure of how to do it. I've networked two PCs before, but this seems more complicated. Is it? How much does it cost?

you got 2 possible ways of doing this. the first one is:

buy a router and configure it accordingly. there might be a problem though: some isp's hook the ip-adress you get on the mac-adress of your NIC. if this is the case, you might want to build a cheap pc, install linux and use the pc as a router. you just have to insert 2 NIC's one you hook onto the DSL-Line, on the 2nd one you connect a small hub and there you go. what you have to do in both cases is: you have to set the internal ip of either the router or the pc as your standard gateway in the ip-settings...

What everyone I know does - buy a router. Make certain it can hook-up to as many PCs as you need it to. (This isn't always as apparent as it sounds; ask someone who is in the know.)

Hook cables up and you're set. The router should be in the 80 to 100 dollar range, but that's not so bad since you'll probably all split the costs, right?

Why Linux? Its much easier to do it in Windows thru ICS.

Because you can set up a pathetically cheap pc to run linux with IP masquerading, and just leave it running forever. And use it as a mailserver too

I know... But the prob is that if he doesn't know how to set up dsl with the 3 computers, chances are he isn't going to be able to figure out linux. With Windows its just a matter of running a simple wizard.

Anyway, you can set up a pathetically cheap Windows pc to do the very same thing. I have a Pentium II 350mhz, 96mb/ram pc running as my Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing pc at home. It pretty much has been running forever.

Yeah but we're talking a 486 or even a 386 here. I'd be happier running a server on linux than on Windows, just for the reliability you get from simplicity. But you have a point about the technical level. I'd personally just buy me a router
