OH MY GOD!!!! I HATE IT!!! I FUCKING HATE IT!!! KILL ME NOW!!!
Excerpts from an e-mail I sent to one of my crew members today: "So we CAN do timecode without worrying about seeing it, eh? If it doesn't cost extra and Colorlab will do it, we should get the rest done this way. Then maybe when I get some decent money I can re-transfer the first rolls with it. Which reminds me - POST SYNC! OMG, if they can do that I just might shoot myself in the head out of happiness. You have no idea how complicated timecode is becoming. The more I read, the less straightforward of an answer I get. Drop-frame, non-drop-frame, 30, 29.97, 24, 23.976, matchback, 60 fields, 30 fields, DAT, 48 kHz, 40.048 kHz, blah, blah, blah. It ain't pretty. The Europeans have it so easy by comparison. Whoever designed NTSC standards should be shot on sight." *kicking and thrashing about like a three-year old having a temper tantrum* I just know that I'll finish editing the film and two days later I'll have to do everything all over again because of some stupid fuckup involving this. This is one of the few reasons why digital online non-linear editing is a complete bitch. |

So what makes PAL and SECAM so much easier to work with?

I don't know about SECAM, but PAL doesn't have a 1% pulldown, which can be damn confusing. That's why NTSC is 29.97 (drop-frame) and not 30 fps. PAL is 25 fps and also has a higher screen resolution.
Part of the problem is that I don't know if my telecine conversion is 29.97 or 30. Then, I have to figure out if I need to bring it down anyway for conversion purposes. After all that, I need to make the audio conform, again with pulldown. I could go on or go further into detail, but it gets a little fuzzy even to me. Apparently, though, this is so confusing that even fulltime editors and sound engineers are easily confused. The only people who really understand this and can figure this out on the fly are the lab techs. |
