Clemons says assistant coach gave him cash By NATE CARLISLE of the Tribune’s staff Published on columbiatribune.com Tuesday, December 9, 2003 Former Missouri basketball player Ricky Clemons told a friend that assistant coaches gave him and other players money and that he was told to deny the transactions if asked about them by the Boone County prosecutor. Clemons can be heard making the statements in telephone conversations recorded while he was incarcerated at the Boone County Jail. Repeated payments such as he describes would constitute a major violation of National Collegiate Athletic Association rules. References to money — some of them ambiguous — are made throughout the 24 hours of conversations recorded between July 16 and Aug. 14 obtained by the Tribune. Clemons made a specific admission to Amy Stewart during a conversation about depositions taken by Boone County Prosecutor Kevin Crane. Stewart is the wife of University of Missouri-Columbia Associate Athletic Director Ed Stewart. Crane took a series of depositions in March as he was preparing to try Clemons for choking Jessica Bunge, who described herself as his girlfriend. In a deposition of assistant coach Lane Odom, Crane implied that Bunge saw Odom give money to Clemons. Odom denied the claim under oath. In his conversation with Stewart, Clemons refutes only that Bunge saw the transaction. “She never seen him,” Clemons is heard saying in reference to Odom, “but she always went and cashed them.” “She what?” Stewart asks. “She always took it to the bank.” “She took it to the bank?” “Yeah,” Clemons said, “because when I would get it from him and give it to her, and she would take it to the bank. So, she, she knew everything. I never tried to hide nothing.” In statements to the police and to Crane, Bunge has said she deposited Clemons’ checks into his bank account. Clemons directly connects money from assistant coach Tony Harvey to Tiger standouts Arthur Johnson and Rickey Paulding. In one conversation, Clemons tells Stewart: “When I first got here, they did, they did everybody. I mean, they do A.J. and Rickey. If they need money, they’d go to Harvey. He, he’d get it for ’em.” “They what?” Stewart asks. “If they needed money, they’d go to Harvey,” Clemons responds. “He’d get it for ’em. But it was him first, and I stopped messing with him. I stopped talking to him and shit and then went to Lane.” In two instances on the recordings, Clemons implies he received more money than Tony Cole, the former University of Georgia men’s basketball player who claimed to have received hundreds of dollars from boosters and coaches. “Just know it’s bigger than Tony Cole,” Clemons tells Stewart. “He got a couple hundred dollars. He paid for his apartment or that. Shit. That’s nothing. That’s a raincheck.” Tiger men’s basketball coach Quin Snyder, said in a statement he could not comment on the recordings. “As I have said all along, I respect the process of the investigation and until the university and the NCAA reach the conclusion of this process, I will not comment on individual allegations or stories,” he said. Athletic department spokesman Sam Fleury said Johnson, Paulding and other players would not be available for comment. Johnson’s and Paulding’s telephone numbers are unlisted. In an interview yesterday, Michael Devaney, the MU electrical engineering professor leading MU’s part of the basketball inquiry, declined to comment on whether Clemons has admitted to investigators that he took money. “That would be absolutely within the protected scope of the investigation,” Devaney said. Clemons also claims he was told in a meeting with Odom and Wally Bley, Clemons’ attorney at the time, to deny cash payments if Crane asked about them. “Wally and Lane was there in his office downtown, and he was like, ‘If they ask you anything about some money or some clothes, you say no,’” Clemons tells Stewart. “And then Coach Snyder talked to me, and he knew that they was going to find a lot of clothes because they took the shoes from her house. So he knew they were gonna find it so he couldn’t lie about that. “So he went ahead and told them about the clothes because he said they asked. ‘Yeah, you can tell them I gave you, you know, a little bit of clothes.’ ” Snyder admitted in his sworn deposition that he gave Clemons two pairs of shoes and one pair of pants he was planning to discard. He denied knowledge of cash payments to Clemons from Odom. Crane never asked Clemons about receiving money. Clemons was not deposed, and he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges before his case went to trial. Bley said he never advised Clemons to lie and that Odom was never present during conversations he had with his client. “I would never tell any client to lie, including Ricky Clemons, and did not tell him or suggest to him to lie about anything.” In multiple instances throughout the recordings, Clemons says his former coaches, including Snyder, are concerned he’ll tell the NCAA and reporters about the payments. He says the Tiger coaches, Odom in particular, are trying to steer him out of Columbia. Clemons says Snyder is afraid he’ll disclose the payments, but the former player says he doesn’t want to turn into a whistleblower like Cole. “You know I don’t even feel comfortable like that,” Clemons says, “because, you know, I mean, coach stood by me.” thats too bad because we were gonna go all the way baby. diaper dandies baby! OHHHHHHH! |
