I was flying standby with my brother once. We were going from Houston to NYC. It was about four in the afternoon and my brother went to get a pretzel to snack on since the plane wasn't serving a meal. I was bored, so I went to the magazine stand and was reading a GQ when this middle-aged guy approached me. He asked me where I was flying to and we talked for a minute, about sports and guy stuff, and then I walked him down the terminal to the nearest lavatory and blew him for $50.

a lot of my relatives work in the airline business, so they're always getting free stand-by tickets. depending on where you're going/what time of the year, they can be okay. but take note that it really sucks to be stranded in an overnight layover in the dallas airport because your next flight sold out.
