Red face NBC begins work on The Office

this will either mean something to you or it won't...but if you were lucky enough to have seen the UK original, here's some guff on the US adaptation.

http://www.filmjerk.com/nuke/article676.html

everyone should go out of their way to watch it when it finally airs

almost certainly. i don't know why a major station doesn't just buy the brit original and stick it on at a primetime slot...

rightly or wrongly, they obviously don't give the american public much credit.

if something's funny, it's funny...no matter what nationality the actors are

we didn't remake Frasier, Seinfeld, Cheers, Roseanne, Friends, etc, etc...

I would rather watch the originals on BBC America than watch any kind of American version.

My favorite British comedies (Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served) get part of their humor from the setting. An American Hyacinth would probably be unbearable.

Yeah it is. I actually haven't seen any of it except for a clip with a guy dancing that my friend in Warwickshire sent to me.

I am still waiting for Ballykissangel to come to BBC America...

I've seen Season 1 of the British one and I don't think am American one can top it. I don't think Americans appreciate improv in their shows as much as the British do, right?

I'm not sure what Americans can appreciate vs Britons, but I know for sure that americans will fuck this up good and proper compared to the UK version.

Oh for fuck's sake.
Coupling didn't work, and now NBC is trying this. Why can't the program department come up with something original for once, rather than just regurgitate another BBC production? Now I honestly don't give a damn about what NBC does since my areas of television interest lie elsewhere, but it's the principle of the matter that really gets to me.

Why do we need these "Americanised" versions, anyway? Whatever it is that gives a show that "special something", is not necessarily translatable. And the practice is especially appalling when Americans are already able to watch the original source programming from Britain. To re-create--in verbatim, mind you--an "American" version of Coupling was absolutely, mind-bogglingly pointless. But what's so damn funny is that the American primetime audiences couldn't seem to stomach the series, lambasting its "overly risque" nature. Dimwits.

as a side note: WHY NBC is doing this is simple.

Friends is ending this year. They need a hit. They are FUCKED if they don't have a hit. Coupling was groomed to be the Friends replacement, it didn't work. Desperate for a hit, they're revamping BBC hits hoping that they can save thier prime-time schedule.

Y'see, NBC has been riding high on Thursdays since, fuck, the early 80s. Cheers/ Cosby / Sienfeld / Friends. These all ruled Thursdays and it became thier jewel night. Now they've finally reached the end and nothing can take the slot to gaurantee they'll keep thursdays.

So they're reaching out to see "Hey, that worked on BBC, lets air it here!"

Personally I think they should just air "who wants to fuck my cousin?" reality TV show or something, that'll get the masses watching if "The Simple Life" is any indication of where TV viewing is going.

I know. And that's why I received a certain amount of sadistic pleasure from watching the show fall flat on its arse.

Boy, the NBC execs really don't get it, do they? The viewership doesn't translate that easily--especially when they expect their diluted version of the original series to catch on with audiences just as well. When the British watch a series from America, they don't say to themselves, "gee, I wish this was more British-like"--no, they enjoy the show for what it is and because of what it is. And some British shows are done in a style which couldn't possibly be replicated by producers with American-focused sensibilities, no matter what. It just wouldn't work. (I've heard that there was once a very short-lived American version Fawlty Towers...and oh, the sheer horrors that come to mind when I contemplate what this must have been like.)

Hah. They might as well, until they think of something better to do with the slot than fill it with another poor BBC spinoff.
