Exclamation Why do so many people want a playoff system for college football??

This makes absolutely no sense to me.

College football is most definitely not just all about crowning one and only one champion at the end of the season. There's more to it than that. What makes college football so great is the fact that every game counts. If a playoff system were developed, all of that would be lost. The regular season would just be kind of meh. Big games wouldn't be so big anymore, because the losing team would know that they can get another shot in the playoffs.

It would just be stupid. Obviously the current situation has problems, but developing a playoff system is just not the answer.

I'm all for the bowl games as they already are, but I think that those bowl games should be part of the playoffs. all the teams that win their respective bowl games would advance to other games until only one team is left standing. that team then is recognized as the national champion. none of this "we're all winners" bullshit.

But that would present the same problem.

It wouldn't matter what bowl game anyone went to. Finish 7-5 and win your bowl game, and you're as well off as a team that went 12-0. It just wouldn't work.

are you suggesting that the professional playoffs don't work? how many times in the past few seasons have lower seeds knocked off higher seeds and won the super bowl? the world series? the stanley cup? the nba finals? it makes for an exciting playoffs because no team in the playoffs would be out of the hunt.

I don't want college football to be like pro sports.

Duh.

besides minor rule variations and the fact that they're not being paid to play, college football is just like nfl football.

and after all, what's the next step up from college football? the nfl. it's like saying that you don't want indie musicians to play music with the same instruments that bands on major labels play.

...but this isn't even true.

Develop a playoff system, and it will be. And that is why a playoff system would suck. It would make NCAA football like NFL football. And that would suck huge balls.

only have half the teams make the playoffs, this creates some big games from teams pushing for the playoffs. playoffs are exciting, every game is huge. i think it is a fair to trade in some big games for a bunch of huge ones. i'm just talking about sports in general, i know nothing of how college football works.

But none of the big rivalry games would matter at all anymore.

Rivalries within conferences would still be alright...but all the other ones would just be completely meaningless.

It just wouldn't be the same. If you want playoffs and all that shit, watch the goddamn NFL. Don't take away my NCAA football. I will fucking cut you.

after one year of playoffs i assure you that new rivalries will be born. well, maybe not in football since it would only be a one game thing. the seven game series in hockey is insane for developing rivalries.

but you do have a point in that there is no real way of keeping the first half of the season intense.

I said this in the other thread, and I'll state it again: Playoffs work in every other college sport, even football in D1-AA, D2 and D3. Why the hell they can't work for the "big sport" is out of control.

...but the no-playoff thing is what makes D-1 football so unique and cool and kickass.

I really don't think I'd give a shit about it anymore if they went to a playoff system.

I'd rather have games that lack intensity in the beginning of the season and then have 7 playoff games which all mean a helluva lot to the teams in them. It sure beats having a plethora of meaningless crap games that no one cares about (including the players it seems alot of the time) like the EV1.net Houston Bowl at the end of the season.

This is why you should watch pro sports and leave the NCAA alone for people like me!

I do. College sports is all about which team drank less the night before the games anyways.

You are one of like 10 people in America who thinks that way. The rest of us are immensely frustrated that we can't have one fucking national champion every year. I understand what you're saying, but you're a dolt if you think long-standing rivalries are just going to whittle and fold underneath a playoff system; they won't. Big games will still matter just as much even if the two teams aren't playing to stay undefeated; we've worked under the current system too long for conference games to become meaningless, and major rivalries aren't going to change for anything.

In summation: Give me a national champion and I will be happy.
