That's a speaker cabinet.
That requires an external amplifier. Ok. A combo is a preamp a power amp and a speaker cabinet all in one box a stack (half stack, etc) setup is a head (consisting of a preamp and a poweramp) and an external separate speaker cabinet a head can also be broken up into preamp and poweramp as separate components sometimes |

...and like..do combos generally kind of suck?
If anyone is really bored...tell me what kind of set-up I should get with a budget of about $700. I would appreciate it more than you can imagine. |

You'd want that if you had a powerfull amp pumping at 8ohm. In a simple way, a pre amp will get your sound a certain "standard" level without clip, then it will go to a power amp and then to a cabinet. A combo has a pre amp+power amp+cab, normally they are less powerfull but versatille and cheaper than buying amp (pre+power)+cab, and better if you want to evol and only then spending big bucks on something that will sound like what you want (when you aquire special tastes). A 4x10 + horn is almost standard, will give you enough bass and rich mids, a 1x15" is more of my taste (begginer here on 250w@4ohm***5" combo), will sound phater but muddier and less defined, with darker sounding highs not crystal shattering ones (think of joy division, where a 2x18" was used), but anyway, the bass has a big role on it too.

As said above, there are seperate pre-amps and power amps, but that's not that normal and really more expensive if you went into rackmount stuff.
Combos suck if they are bad, most are for practice and have no power, I'd recommend you at least (and strict minum) 60W to play (at home!) to get some thumpier bass. Mine is a 95' carlsbro 250w on a 15" as said, has a 9 band eq and one of the best sounding chorus I've ever heard, can't say enough good stuff about it, since I play mostly post punk lead bass stuff as joy division and that kind of stuff. Trace Elliot combos were good too sounding too, since they are gone, you may find some for cheap. But the problem is, most powerfull combos are sometimes as expensive as buying a amp+cab, mine was on a steal price since it as an old model so I went for it. |

Oh just to add, most of the overdriven stuff you listen from adam jones goes trough a Sansamp bassdriver DI wich is a direct box, wich is used to inject signal to the power amp (like a portable pre amp were you personalize settings) but it's only one weapon of it's vast arsenal (proco turbo rat for overdrive too), as I remember he mainly uses an Ampeg svt pro 5(? I don't remember if it's the 5, it's the one rated at 1350w, but the lower powered ones sound the same since only the power amp differs).
Another consideration is that on bass, unlike in guitar, valve powered amps ain't that important, since you want your sound (normaly) the cleaner as possible, and valve heads colour your sound (but they provide clipping on the pre amp as a "feature" that makes sweet overdrive, on a regular solid state pre amp, clipping must be avoided at all cost). Most heads are fully solid state (even expensive ones), some as the svt pro's have two pre amps, one being valve driven so you can blend to add some colour if you want to. Completely valve heads (pre+power amp) are rare since they aren't very powerfull (due to being necessary a shitload of valves to make a 400W bass amp, to make let's say, the same perceivable noise and match a 150W valve guitar amp). To maintain such a beast (and the electricity account lol)would be a real pain, so unlike in guitars were you need a valve section for distortion and compression, it's really a matter of choice and you won't be overlooked with a solid state amp. |
