it moves data closer together on your harddrive....thus speeding things up a bit

It organizes files on your hard drive to help you access them quicker.

basically, when you save data to the drive, it doesn't really care where on the drive you save it to. defragging takes out all the spaces and puts everything in a more condensed block. it helps things run faster, i guess. not much though.
