Default Can you move out of a place after signing a lease?

I'm tired of being followed to work by drug addicts in vans, and being followed once more when I'm going back to the apartment. I'm tired of living in the ghetto and having the government do everything they can to keep me poor. I'm tired of living with a roommate who refuses to acknowledge that she shares this fucking apartment with four other people. Her goddamn boyfriend is here everyday for hours, and she KNOWS I hate the fucker. Just the sound of his voice makes me want to grab the butcher knife out of the kitchen and stab him repeatedly.

This isn't a home; it's a holding cell.

I put my name on the lease to this apartment less than four months ago, and it won't expire till next July, but I really want to get the hell out of here before then. I had not realized what I was getting into, when I left JPUSA and moved to St. Louis.

Yeah you can break a lease but it's very expensive to do so. It costs in the hundreds. I had two friends break their leases. The first friend paid $600 to break his lease. The second friend paid $800.
I guess it just depends on how many months are left on the lease.

FUCK. I only work part-time; if I'm moving, I'll need all the money I've got. And I've still got over eight months on that lease.

What does it say in your lease?

Can you sub-let?

Most likely, if you guys break your lease, you'll be charged re-letting fee and have to pay rent through next July, BUT, the apartment complex has a duty to mitigate damages which means that they have to make a reasonable effort to find a new tenant for the apartment. You only pay rent until that time comes when they find someone else to move in.

The re-letting fee varies from apt. to apt. but all apartment complexes have the right to charge rent through the term of the lease AND the duty to mitigate damages.

If you live in a big city like STL they should not be able to charge you more than the re-letting fee plus one month's rent.

The main thing is to be aware of your rights before you talk to the assholes who run the place so they don't try and take advantage of the situation more than they legally can.

Another thing. My roommate's boyfriend uses all our shit. He doesn't even live here, and Julie lets him make long distance phone calls, use our computer, fuck with the AC/heating, and clutter up our fridge (and yes, one of my roommates did receive a mini-fridge from her parents, but apparantly she's not intending on sharing it, so we've still got five people sharing one fridge.).

He's had the nerve to come up to me before and tell me he needs to use the Internet, or he needs to use the phone. He constantly downloads files off the Internet and changes our starting page. He's fucked up the control settings, and every time I finally manage to fix it, he fucks it up again. He does not pitch in at all with our bills, yet he stays here hours every day, sponging off us. None of my roommates will confront Julie about this--in fact they changed our bill plans so that we have to pay for a higher service charge every month, instead of just being charged the extra on what he's costing us.

I've tried talking to her but she fucking ignores me. She'll walk right out of the room if the topic is brought up. Before the rest of my roommates gave up on talking with her, we tried holding house meetings, like a month in advance. Julie would promise she'd come, then the day of the meeting would arrive and she'd either not show up all, or come in during the last five minutes, with her boyfriend.

If there's that many of you living there and everyone is unhappy but this bitch and her boyfriend then you guys should just move out. It wouldn't be that expensive when split up. Besides, sanity has no monetary value.

The other three won't do it. It pisses me off--they at least have families they can move back in with.

Sanity has no monetary value. Damn straight. I had three years of bad roommates in a row until I found two that fit me well. Totally worth it.

Shit. Now how do I get through the next eight months without killing her boyfriend?

Hey! Anyone got a gun I can buy?

Just burn the joint down, seriously. If it burns down, you can find a new place to live. Just make sure it looks accidentle, or pay someone to do it for you, that way they can't get caught and you won't be framed.

I'll do it for $20 bucks when I'm in St. Louis over Christmas. My uncle lives in the area (somewhere on that big lake and a place called Beaver's Bend or some nonesense). He owns a lot of Mercedes dealerships in St. Louis.

I wonder if you'd still be tied to your lease, though. Even if it did burn, the apt. would be responsible to find you another place to live and I bet taht would tie you to stay in the same situation you are now.

Ace can probably help me, I know he's doing property law crap at Marquette.

Maybe I can fake my own death, move across the country, and assume another identity.

I'm going to have to attempt to get out of a lease myself soon too. Not fun.

Call your landlord and explain the situation to him and see what he says.

I just moved out of the same situation with the sponging boyfriend. He ate all my food, ran up all our bills and said "I'm looking for a job to help pay rent" every month. He never did. I arranged a new place to live then moved out. I told them a few days before I planned on leaving (thought I had warned them that this was bullshit and if it didn't change I'd be leaving in September.) So yeah, if you're nice, you can put up a roommate search ad and help them find a replacement for you. If you're unlucky, your asshole roommate might wanna make you go to court or something, but that's pretty unlikely. Just say you wanna leave and help them replace you.

The results of mine: The boyfriend got onto the lease then broke up with my roommate. They live together with another girl in my place, bitter and unhappy.
