Goddamnit! Either he perspired a few centuries too early, or I was born a few too late. Either way, contemporary music blows.
hehe; cute.

Out of everyone mentioned, I think Cobain probably had the most quality music yet to produce that we never got to hear.

I also feel badly about Layne Staley, but even though he was probably not going to give us a great deal more music, I wish he would have given us more in the years before his death.

Cobain was already on the road to corporate rock.

And Layne Staley died years before he overdosed.

Also, when a musician dies before their time, it seems to make them in retrospect seem better than they were. If Michael Jackson were shot in 1989, he would be hailed as a great citizen, ambassador for peace and freedom and the greatest musican of our time by the media rather than the freaky pedophile that he is.

In general I tend to agree with this.

If Hendrix were alive now people would probably be giving him grief for not progressing enough or saying he has become so self-indulgent that his music is no longer relevant.

or maybe if Mick Jagger died in the Rolling Stones heyday they would have said he was a brilliant rock artist whose best material was still to come.....

that being said, just listening to Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk & it's safe to say it's not hyperbole that JB was getting much much better.

Elliott Smith
Layne Staley

and John Lennon for good measure. But I was too young to remember him alive, so I don't think I can really count it.

I dunno if it is totally the case, but I can't seem to recall a single person mentioning Elliott Smith on this board before he died...

You haven't been around that long. Elliot Smith was one of the most consitently well like musicians around on the Music Board.

Not a fan myself, though.

It sucks that Shannon Hoon died too. He had an unique voice.
