Angry I'm sorry, but i hate medieval lit.

With the exception of Dante's Inferno, I find most of it to be so unnecessary. I don't understand how you could spend your entire life devoted to studying and teaching works like Mabinogion, Marie De France, Piers Ploughman, Morte d' arthur etc. They're usually kinda fun to read and they're all dripping with metaphor but to what end? I just don't understand the appeal.

I was about to smack you down with Dante, but you clearly have taste enough to exempt him.

nr: Purgatorio, Canto XXVII

I loved Dante. I guess medieval lit gets pardoned since it produced that work.

hmm. maybe i should narrow it down to the romantic short stories of the medieval period and not be so generalized. I dind't LOVE Chaucer or anything, but it's definitely worth reading a few of those stories.

That just sounds funny.

Does she bill herself as one of the leading medievalists in the country is this just something that's widely known on campus?

I had a prof. who was one of the country's leading experts on polymers. A real winner let me tell ya.

Dante - 1265 to 1321. Divine Comedy was probably published between 1315 and 1320, or thereabouts.

If anyone wants to embark upon Dante, I recommend the new Oxford edition (Durling/Martinez). Inferno's been out for a few years; Purgatorio is coming out in January. You'll have to use someone else for Paradiso, though (Mandelbaum, Singleton, and Ciardi are all good picks).

Who's your leading medievalist?
