Question question about MCIS record sales

is there an official source that says how many copies where sold, and if it was indeed the best selling album or cd of all time. i remember this being dismissed..something about being the best selling cd but NOT album....
i already searched spfc and i can't find much, but its probably cos i'm not searching as much as i should

MCIS is 9x Platinum (last time i checked). This means that there are more than 4.5 but less than 5 million sales of the album itself. These sales are doubled as each CD contains more than 60 minutes of music.

and yes, it has sold more than HIStory. I think the Wall is the best selling double CD of all time, though im not sure if RIAA counts LP Sales as well as CD sales.

The wall isn't the best selling CD of all time, it is 25x Platnum (12.5 mil sales), whereas the Eagles Greatest Hits is 27x Platinum and has 27mil Sales. www.riaa.org has the info, but its down at the minute.

Also, i do not know how the Eagles managed to sell 27million copies of their greatest hits album.

the eagles album doesn't count. it's a greatest hit's collection, not an album.

According to the RIAA it does

P.S - I was 2 million off on sales of the Wall. And reading that list makes me hate the record buying public.

Question

Gary, you seem to be using the english system where 500k sales means platinum, and not the American system of 1 million sales meaning platinum. That's what I remember, at least, and I know that MCIS has sold over 7 million copies.

I think its been established that MCIS is the best selling album of new studio material originally released on CD. So live cds and greatest hits don't count, and album released on vinyl don't count.

I'm going by the RIAA's system (it only counts US Sales I believe), also, the UK system is 300k sold for platinum status, 100k for gold & 60k for silver.

edit: I see where you think my logic is fucked up now. To explain, the RIAA count your normal album as 1 million sales = 1x Platinum (e.g Siamese Dream has sold 4 million Copies, therefore it is 4x Platinum).

However for Double/Triple etc. albums it is counted differently. for these albums every CD with more than 60mins of music each individual sale is counted as an extra sale (i.e 1 double cd is counted as 2 sales) therefore in Mellon Collies example it is 9x Platinum, but has only sold 4.5 million copies.

To put it simply, they count a double album sale twice. For every one album sold the mark it as 2.

Gish = Hut Recordings (only sold about 5- 10k on Caroline i think). Hut is most definatly not an Indie label. I'd guess maybe Nirvana - Bleach is the best selling indie record, and also the only reason Sub Pop still exists.

yeah, but it was mostly released on CD, which is/was the dominant medium, where as when The Wall was released, vinyl was.

Cathy. I don't have an official source on this because there isn't really one. You just take all the other double albums that have sold more than MCIS, and after all the live ones (ie Garth Brooks has a live one that sold 3X as many as MCIS I believe) and the greatest hits ones (ie the Eagles) and the ones not originally released on CD (ie The Wall) are taken out, MCIS is first.

but thats just my understanding.

this is definatly nitpicking, but Dawn to Dusk only has 57 minutes of music on it. Twilight to Starlight has 63, IIRC.

I thought the Offspring's S.M.A.S.H. (or whatever it was) sold somethinkg like 8 million copies on Epitaph.

MCIS is the best selling original double-compact-disc set of all time.

The Wall is the best selling original double-album (including all forms of it - CD, LP, etc) of all time.

If something doesn't fit your paradigm, you can always twist it and bend it until it does.

i think you're right. But i also thought that it counted as a double album if both disks average of ate least 60 minutes. but i can't remember where I heard that. If it's true though, that would explain the 9x platinum/4.5xmil sales figure. right?
