Harbour Bridge security slammed

The scaling of the Sydney Harbour Bridge by an intoxicated 26-year-old man highlighted the disturbing lack of security around potential terrorist targets, the NSW opposition said.

The man was arrested and fined $350 after climbing to the top of the bridge overnight and removing a flag, in the second major breach of bridge security in less than a fortnight.

Last night's incident follows the climbing of the bridge by French daredevil Alain Robert on the day before the Rugby World Cup final, which was held amid the tightest security since the 2000 Olympics.

Opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam said the Sydney man's actions overnight were similar to the graffiti attack on the Opera House earlier this year.

"It highlights that there is effectively no security on Sydney icons which are the most obvious targets in terms of terrorism," Mr Debnam said.

The $350 fine the man received showed the state government was treating the whole thing as a joke, he said.

Police Minister John Watkins said he had ordered a security review after the latest incident, but stressed the man's actions had been assessed as a prank.

"Our officers waited for him to come down before he was arrested and fined," Mr Watkins said.

"If there had been a detection of more sinister motives our counter-terrorism and plans would have swung into action."

Mr Watkins said he would receive a full report on the incident later Monday.

"I want to know how anyone can access the bridge and breach security," he said.

Police said security guards spotted the man, who lives in Cremorne, climbing the north-east pylon of the bridge and called police about 11.50pm (AEDT) Sunday.

The man made his way to the top of the bridge and removed an Australian flag before being arrested.

Sydney Harbour Bridge security was upgraded a year ago because of the growing risk of a terrorist attack. Private security guards patrol it 24 hours a day.

I know it dosnt say it in the article but I heard the guy was on the piss when he was dared to do it.
