I think that 70 is the minimum amount, I finished with 72, lol, I can't be fucked finding all the others for a while

I think we just got 70 but I didn't see any final stage open up. Is it obvious when it happens or do you have to find it?

the final stage opens up when you have completed episode 7(the chase down shadow mario one) of every level. you don't have to do episode 8 of any level to finish the game. you'll know when the final stage has opened because all of delfino plaza gets flooded
