Police investigate fatal shooting of Maryland bus driver
Last Updated Tue, 22 Oct 2002 15:42:44
ASPEN HILL, MD. - A bus driver was shot and killed in Maryland Tuesday morning and police say they are treating it as if it is related to the recent string of sniper attacks.

WASHINGTON DIARY: A city hiding in fear

Conrad Johnson, 35, was hit in the abdomen while standing on the top steps of the commuter bus that was stopped in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring, Md. He was married and had two children.

Police take statements from bus passengers

Montgomery County police Chief Charles Moose confirmed early Tuesday afternoon that Johnson had been taken to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., where he died. Johnson had worked for the county for a decade.

The shooting took place in an area near where the first six sniper shootings took place. It's located off Connecticut Ave., a main artery into Washington.

The 911 call came in at 5:56 a.m. local time.

Police check vehicles

Police were carrying out an extensive search, checking vehicles and closing major roads. But hours after the shooting, they lifted the roadblocks.

Maryland state highway officials are telling people to stay home. Schools in Montgomery County are under "code blue," meaning outdoor activities have been cancelled and doors are locked.

Nine people have been killed and three others injured since the shooting spree began on Oct. 2.

FROM OCT. 22, 2002: Hopes dashed that sniper nabbed

The shooting followed a day of disappointment for investigators. Two people taken in for questioning were later found to be unconnected to the case.

On Monday, police said they had received a call about the attacks, but it was muddled. They issued a public plea for the caller to phone them again.

"The person you called could not hear everything you said," said Moose. "The audio was unclear and we want to get it right. Call us back so that we can clearly understand."

In Tuesday's briefing Moose told reporters he had no new messages to relay to the sniper.
