Unhappy My dad was in a car wreck Sunday morning.

He had just finished dropping me off at work and was heading back via Constitution Boulevard, when, while passing the old folk's home, some old lady driving opposite my dad (on the other side of the street; keep in mind that this is a straight road) decided to make a left turn into the old folk's home parking lot while my dad was still in the way...and POW! She apparently claimed that she didn't see him when she was making the turn...how she couldn't have seen him is anyone's guess...probably lost him behind her cataracts. Anyhoo, she got the ticket, and my dad got a wrecked car and a meager amount of insurance money.

As much as my family hated that car (a 1995 green Stratus that was impossible to drive in reverse and see clearly out of the back due to the way it was designed), we'll miss the versatility of having two cars. I'm sure that's gonna piss the parents off more than anything...especially my mom (it was her car). The damage to our car wasn't all THAT extensive...it's just, we may just get a better car altogether as opposed to getting that piece of crap repaired.

And as for my dad...just a cut-up arm from the airbag being deployed. It's rather gross, but he'll live.

It could've been worse, though...a LOT worse...and I'm glad he's okay.

As for the old lady...

once you got to the point where you were causing accidents because youre elderly, youd think youd give up your liscence.

Just ask the guy who ran over all those people in that Santa Monica pedestrian mall.

It's cool that your dad's ok.

Statistically, teenagers are a far bigger threat than senior citizens on the road.

Speaking of which...

My friend Ross, notorious for being a connving bastard who is notorious for never getting into trouble (in situations where anyone else would get into trouble, he weasels out of it and actually benefits from it somehow), was racing through his negiborhoos in his car last week...some lady comes out of her house and tells him to stop, so he starts speeding up, swerving around the streets and honking his horn nonstop. It gets to the point where the lady gets his license plate # and calls the cops while he's at my friend Bill's house. Apparently, the woman said that he almost hit a kid, which wasn't true and only served to harm her case against Ross. They go to Ross' place, and the cop explains him to the situation, in which the cop claims that what he's being accused of won't hold up in court.

So now Ross thinks that, if she in fact DOES sue him for whatever, he can countersue for defamation of character and court costs. And knowing his history of being a lucky shit who always gets his way, he'd probably win too.

This is just a small sampling of what kind of B.S. he's pulled in his life.

How would she be able to sue Ross?

I was going through a parking lot where its CLEARLY marked that cars can only drive counter-clockwise around... and out of no where, this old lady on a scooter comes cruising THE WRONG WAY around. I had to slam on my brakes, and she smiled at me.

She smiles for the single reason that if i would have hit her, it would have been MY fault, even though she was being totally wreckless.

i have a lesson for all the old people out there

Your scooter + highway = ACCIDENTS.

especially when you are driving ON the highway, not on the shoulder.

use what little brains you have left, people.

Is it a little odd how this thread has turned from a “Geez, its good to hear Crip’s dad is ok” to “fucking old people”. I actually agree with both those statements.

yeah, I've had some close calls with old foagies in my driving career. I've learned to drive extra defensively whenever I see an oldsmobile or a cadillac, since I'm anticipating some kind of stupid and unpredictable driving.

apparently my city boasts one of the (if not THE) oldest driver in Ontario, or possibly Canada. He's like well over 100, legally blind and has the reflexes of a tree, and yet they refuse to revoke his license because it's a matter of pride for this worthless city. On the upside, this guy only goes out for a drive like once a year.

I dunno how far into the news this got, but did you guys hear about this?

fucking rediculous old people need to be tested better or some shit.

Quote:
SANTA MONICA - A car driven by an elderly man plowed through a crowded farmers market Wednesday, killing eight people -- including a 3-year-old girl -- and injuring up to 45 others.

Fifteen of the victims were critically injured, Police Chief James T. Butts Jr. said.

Authorities said the 86-year-old driver, identified by family members as Russell Weller of Santa Monica, told them he may have hit the gas instead of the brake. His family issued an apology Wednesday night.

''Mr. Weller and his family want to express their deepest sympathies to the victims and their families of the tragic accident earlier today,'' Weller family attorney Jim Bianco said in the statement. ''This was an unintentional and unfortunate accident. Mr. Weller is very shaken up, but his thoughts tonight are with the victims and their families."

Witnesses said victims were hurled through the air as the car, running down a street closed for the twice-a-week market, smashed through tents and boxes of produce shortly before 2 p.m.

''It was like a hurricane just came down the center of the street,'' said Megan Sheehy, general manager of a nearby restaurant.

Butts said 20 to 30 people had moderate or light injuries. They were taken to four hospitals by a fleet of ambulances and rescue helicopters. Rain fell briefly as victims were still being removed.

In addition to the child, the dead *******d five women and two men, said coroner's official Juan Jimenez. The bodies remained, unidentified, at the scene late in the day for the investigation.

Butts said the driver was taken to a hospital for a blood test and initial results found no traces of alcohol or psychoactive drugs such as anti-depressants and hallucinogens.

The driver was not arrested, but investigators were considering whether the case was ''manslaughter of some type'' and a matter of whether he was qualified to drive, Butts said.

''There may be some negligence as to his capacity to drive safely,'' Butts said. He noted that the man did have a valid driver's license.

Weller was allowed to leave police headquarters by late afternoon. Walking unsteadily with a cane, he hugged and smiled at people who picked him up from the police station. When a reporter placed a microphone in front of him he said could not comment.

Mary Roney, who has lived two doors down from Weller and his wife for 30 years, said he has never had any trouble driving and she did not know of any health problems.

''A more careful, gentle, loving person you'll never find,'' said Roney, who described him as active in the community, including serving on a library board and tutoring students at Santa Monica High School.

Butts said he did not have an estimate of the car's speed. Witnesses said the 1992 Buick was moving very fast down the three downtown blocks of Arizona Avenue that were closed for the street market.

''Sixty miles per hour and it wasn't slowing down. It was flying. And then people down, dead and everything,'' said David Lang, manager of a shoe store along the market route.

''I heard a car just hit, bang, bang, bang,'' said Mojgan Pour, 38. ''I heard people screaming. By the time I looked, I never even saw the car. I tried to help a man and he died while I was helping him.''

Bahram Manahedgi, 50, said one person was on the hood of the car when it finally came to rest, and a woman was crushed beneath it.

Manahedgi said that when he went to pull the driver out, ''he was an old man. His eyes were open and he was alive. I said, 'Do you know what the hell you did?' He said, 'No.' I just opened the door, I pulled him out.''

A crowd gathered around the car and ''wanted to beat him up,'' Manahedgi said. ''I said, 'He's an old man, leave him alone.'''

The car was extensively damaged, including a smashed front end and windshield. What appeared to be shoes were on its roof.

The market, which takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays, bisects oceanside Santa Monica's popular Third Street pedestrian promenade and is near the famous Santa Monica Pier. It draws thousands of shoppers.
