1956, the Suez-Sinai war when France, Britain and Israel launched an attack against Egypt due to the tolling of the Suez Canal. This tolling was done as a result of the United States and Britain withdrawing financial support as a result of a nationalised industry policy (anti-communist containment).
The results, though obviously militarily victorious for the western forces, showed immaturity, resulted in strong UN pressure, and gave Egypt's leader, Nasser, star status for standing up to the Western powers and achieving all of his goals. This also prompted UN peacekeepers along the Sinai Peninsula. ------ I'd forgotten about the 1956 war!  |
