These songs are pretty mediocre at best. His vocals are performed poorly and mixed way too fucking loud. Too many words/vocals crammed into these strummy songs. Lack of melody all around. I dont get the praise.

Some moments here and there, but his best work since Adore? his best ANYthing? What band have you guys been listening to?

People say every new release is “his best work since Adore” and it is 100% never true

i do like the first song, and faithless darlin', and hard times. and the title track isn't bad

i still barely remember any of them except the first one

where are the melodies

Listening to cotillions in my car, it seems like it’s heavy on the front speakers and barely coming out the rear speakers. Is this the album or is this just my car? It’s weird...

Ok here’s how we can troubleshoot it real quick

Steal a car and play your album in there

If it still sounds the same, steal an album by a different artist and play it in your first car

Then play it in the second car

If it sounds the same: it was the album, all along. If different, steal another car and repeat

(You’re welcome)

Lol utter triumph. If I remember correctly this was in that first hyperbole zeitgeist leak thread.

Best songs— basically the first 5 or 6. Would have made an excellent EP. fragile the spark reminds me of spun, what I’d hoped to hear from Chicago kid.

the last half I couldn’t wait for it to be done, with a few ok songs in that mix.

It's not to high in the mix. I don't ignore it, I just don't agree. You keep saying that as if it is an unquestionable truth, but it's not. That said, it doesn't mean I enjoy everything he's done over the last 19 years. Monuments would have been as much terrible if the voice was almost inaudible or if it was sang by your favorite singer. But Cotillions is a truly beautiful album of its own.

With modern music software, is it possible to separate the vocal tracks in FLAC and re-mix them lower? Or would you need the stems? Release the stems from Bill.

Not saying even the biggest fan would be enticed by such a task.

My highlights:

Hard Times
Jubilee
Fragile, the Spark
Cotillions
Colosseum
Cri de Coeur
Like Lambs
Neptulius
Anon

Favorite, by far: Fargile, the spark

As for the melodies, as you know, in order to our brain appreciate melodies it has to be acquainted with them. How come you claim that you only heard the album once and be talking about melodies?

So Billy almost didn't release Cotillions on CD. Why doesn't he give CD editions some love?

For example...he could have recorded and included 'Cardinal Rule' as a bonus track (only on CD) and call it a 'special edition'.

Many fans who are into Vinyl would have also purchased the CD edition.

Katie and Billy recorded a song called Hey Stranger, a potential bside. He's releasing an extra EP with songs he wrote after the album was recorded.

I never said I listened to it once. I've listened five or six times.

And yes I agree that brains get used to melodies, but some also stick out as good pretty much right away. Other melodies may be more complex and take a bit, and they could even be better, but an almost complete lack of catchy melodies is alienating a bit. Call me a shallow music listener, but I'm not talking about 1979-type melodies, either. For example I think of Zowie, and Aeronaut as melodious. Ogilala isn't my favorite album ever, but it is much more tuneful than this one, IMO. The only melodies that I even remember are from To Scatter One's Own (I like the "not that this matters" bit) and Colosseum. And that "so don't stand still" part of, I think it's Hard Times?

I'm glad you really enjoy it, though. I'm not opposed to it growing on me.

Agree with reprise. The songs are devoid of melody aside from the first two songs and maybe a couple others. Never had such a harrrrd time making it thru a Corgan release. 17 songs is way too much of this nothing.

Last album above ok was Thefuturembrace. After it all albums were below ok level.

I struggled myself to be able to listen to this album until the end.

Billy posted updates while recording the album, and he mentioned Katie Cole was recording vocals for a song called Hey Stranger.

After finishing the album, he mentioned he will record a new EP with songs he wrote on the road after Cotillions. Black Lungs comes to mind

I agree his vocals are too high in the mix but I also think this album is a masterpiece. It is a real ‘grower’ as well. I didn’t feel that after the first listen. It’s a bit complex like his older stuff so it takes a few listens till you start really appreciating it. Best abum I have heard in at least a decade. And I was expecting nothing so nice surprise.

I like it a lot, but it does seem to be lacking melodies. Lyrically it's better than his past few things but it still is missing something. Musically it's great. I love the extra instrumentation. Really though when I want to hear alt-country/folk I'd rather throw on an Avett Brothers album. More melodies, better lyrics. They manage to say so much more with less words.

Ogilala is a 7/7 album for me. Great stuff. Love it.

This, in typical Billy Corgan fashion, takes a few steps forward and a few back.

There’s nothing on here I like (love) as much as Half Life, Spaniards, Archer... I could list most of that record... maybe I’d give this a 10/12. It’s a cool record. His heart is clearly more into this than that so it’d be great if he’d do more of this and less of that.
