honestly, while I like the solo in the 8m Drown cut, I think Shine is probably the better song

Billy's Instagram might be the best thing about the band right now.

Hahahaha, I just saw Collective Soul play with Gin Blossoms over the weekend. I'm not a super fan or anything but here's some rambling thoughts...

Shine was the 2nd song they played...probably wanted to get it done early. They played it with a piano intro. It sounded pretty good! Ed Roland walked out before their set and I didn't even recognize him. He was wearing a weird scarf hat with his hair in a ponytail. He went out to talk about a guitar they were auctioning off (one at every show?) that was signed by both bands to raise money for a cancer charity that Robin Wilson works with. They have a new album coming out in a few weeks and they were selling CDs of it at the show but they sold out before I could get one. I'm surprised I haven't seen it leaked online yet.

It seemed like a short show. They kind of dragged out the endings of their songs. I wish they'd gone right into the next song more often...maybe fit more songs in. I was more interested in watching their drummer Johnny Rabb though and how he played and had his kit set up. He used to be the world record fastest drummer, and has worked with electronic drum companies and has played drum and bass style stuff.

If Billy is still upset today about losing a lawsuit over a song that doesn't sound very similar to his (to me, at least) that's really pretty lame. I'd hope there's more to it than that. It should be aincient history at this point.

I never thought Drown and Shine sounded anything alike. The only similarity I see is between Shine and Snail. The brief guitar riff Billy does with A chord before the full band kicks in is similar to the Shine riff, but in a different key, Shine is in the key of D. Either way it's sour grapes and he was just pissed because they had a huge hit before SP did. I would even venture to say that commercially Shine was a bigger hit than any SP song period.

I think it's kind of a dig at how soft and left-wing the overall vibe of Netphoria has become... That's why he tied in the gluten-free dig.

Well, they were probably listening to more than the 90s "throwback" station on Sirius FM, if that's what you mean

That's actually probably true. It's definitely stood the test of time in a big way.

I'm always surprised that this song never caught on aside from it's initial radio run

I can't believe no one brought up the Collective Soul, Billy Corgan diss track

Beggar's description
Of what I've been missing
Exploit your position
Don't think I didn't listen
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little better now
Success is so tragic
Pain is your gadget
Your tongue's just lashing
Just bitching by habit
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little purer now
Hey I hope you're feeling
Securer now
Help me I plea
I don't understand
Your ways and your means
You smashing young man
Help me to see
The good you have planned
You're wearing me thin
You smashing young man
You preach synthetic-like
Peace is an oversight
It's nothing to ignite
Your self-lit spotlight
Hey I hope you're feeling
A little special now
Hey I want to tell you
I think you're special now
Help me I plea
I don't understand

I don't recall wanting to

It's the only logical guess that comes to my mind. These kennel cafe places are growing in popularity in these trendy areas and shit like that

Shine is pretty much a rock staple at this point... Not saying it's deserved.

It's like someone saying they've never heard Mr Jones.

Dude can’t even get his analogies right.

When he was young it was Nuclear War.
In the 90’s it was the Millenium.

He’s right there will always be ‘End of Days’ fears, but Climate Change isn’t weather, you ignorant moron, Billy.

It’s always one step forward, two steps back with this guy, he’s a fucking lunatic.

It wasn't a hit in the UK / Ireland. In fact, I don't think Collective Soul ever had any reach this side of the pond. I certainly had never heard of them, and I grew up listening to alternative rock in the early 90s, read Melody Maker every week, etc etc.
