I'll give SP3.0(?) the benefit of the doubt until they actually book studio time to record the new album after the tour, but the quality on these songs isn't any better than say Zeitgeist at best.

Also, why people go to Rubin to record I'll never understand.

That's my thought also, it's the kind of disaster that happens in a studio, you keep adding layers and never realize that each layer makes it a little worse, not a little better. The thing is, BC is very good at over-producing songs, he tends to add nice layering, but the layers on this song are a wreck. It's either because he was rushed, or he took on a musical genre that he's not practiced in. It hard to pick a weakest point, there are so many, but I'd say the drumming is the worst aspect of the track.

I think if they play this song live, live renditions will come out better as it will lack their poorly executed studio embellishments, and I assume Jimmy can't do the drum part any worse than he did.

[quote=dustrocck;4478784]This is one of those songs that probably could have worked if they were really booking a bunch of studio time and got the mix and overdubs right.

It's pretty clear they went in with Rubin for a couple of days, did a few takes, did some overdubs, and that's it. Jimmy's drumming may as well be a drum machine, James isn't there.

Yeah, this song is just bad. On the bright side, I heard the full album last night and theres a couple decent tracks besides the ones released. Marchin On and With Sympathy are both not bad. Some of the others I could do without as well...

The instrumental part with James' solo is pretty good.

Billy's singing is actually pretty good in this too.

I think the Puff Daddy Ava Adore reference works because something about the song, maybe the pace or the drum beat, screams late 90s to me.

Lets get to the important issue here

SS (Ghosts) is about Nazis (the actual SS) and the collapse of the Third Reich. Everything from the artwork, down to the mention of tiger tanks, rockets, turncoat betrayal (a reference to Heinrich Himmler betraying Hitler).

I've had too much coffee.

Man, it's kinda depressing to be reminded that Original Smashing Pumpkins and post-2000 Smashing Pumpkins are kinda the same band (well, it could be argued that this isn't "the real SP," but I think semantic arguments about what makes a band a band are boring and fruitless, as there are no real objective criteria to appeal to, so I'm just going to call them "the same band" for the purposes of expediency).

It's like my brain just compartmentalizes this shit, and I can enjoy pre-2000 SP without even remembering what they've become.

I only really check out the new material as a curiosity to see what they are up to. And the only thing that has motivated me to do even that is having more of the original lineup back. I had stopped really checking out the current SP happenings a few years ago.

After a decade of this stuff, it's hard to see why people are still holding out hope that "the next release may be better" and the band will be worth following again. I'm perfectly happy to check out shit like the reissues and tours like the last one, playing the classic shit, but beyond that, if I look at new SP material, it's not really with any hopes or expectations. It's just kinda more, "lol, I wonder what my favourite band sounds like now. Oh wow, it's terrible, haha."

Yeah that was my experience with REM as well after Berry left.

"Hmm, Up is actually way better than I expected, not bad."

Each subsequent album was more meh that I think I listened to the last 2 maybe twice each.

The very last R.E.M. album was a pretty worthy goodbye. & they never stopped kicking unholy asses on the live stage - got to see 'em in '08 & it was fantastic

Loved the last single "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" but didn't like the last 3 albums. They were too good of a band to be terrible, I just usually don't listen to anything past Hi-Fi or maybe UP.

Definitely a great live band always.

i really like some tracks off Reveal - Around the Sun is almost unanimously considered their worst but even that one has a couple of salvageable tracks. Accelerate was alright, & as I said I really liked the last one. Haven't heard much from any of them since the split aside from maybe Michael Stipe occasionally making an "appearance" somewhere

2 more songs are NOT bad.

Looking forward to the 3 star reviews, but mostly to the run2me 2.0 song.
