Does it depend on the context of the use of the word? It seems to me that the reason the word is derogatory is that it's often used by males to police women when they are not being passive or following a man's demands. But in the contexts above, it looked like the posters were referencing how other people might call one a "bitch" for being particular about their weed. Not an indictment of women who are assertive about their preferences, but an acknowledgment that asserting one's preferences might get one labeled this or that by a dealer or something. In at least one of the situations being referenced, the target of the term would have been a male, anyway (Tim), and the joke seemed to be about Soy's hypothetical response to him after him being fussy about the kind of weed he would be purchasing.

I feel like it's not a nice word though, and even when you apply it to men, it's an insult BECAUSE it's like calling a man a woman. I understand that it's being used like it has a different meaning when it's in the abstract or whatever, but it's hard to sever the usage from the fact that it's a derogatory term specifically for women.

I do understand that the word still retains its misogynistic connotations when applied to men because the basis of the insult is that it is "shameful" for a man to act like a woman, but in the quotes being used as examples of casual sexism on these boards, neither poster was using it in this way, either. One poster was talking about how one may have to be picky about the strain of cannabis one is buying, though it may get one though of in a certain way by one's dealer. The other poster was making light of a previous poster's use of the word when talking about her boyfriend buying weed, and not applying the word to either the poster or her boyfriend himself.

Maybe "bastard?" But even that has patriarchal underpinnings, because the whole reason it's supposed to be terrible to be a male child born out of wedlock is that inheritance is patrilineal. The daughters are never "legitimate" heirs to begin with.

it has become a generic expletive, but calling someone son of a bitch is literally saying like you are shitty person because your mom was a bitch. So. I dunno guys, I don't see any of these usages being disconnected from the fact that the word has impact because it is an anti-woman slur
