yeah that's exactly it. i didn't listen to the radio back then so i don't give a fuck if it was popular. those songs kick ass. punk-metal or something. incredible energy.

I enjoy Bleach the most out of all three, but just because I put Nevermind last doesn't mean I'm shitting on it. It's still a fantastic album, but I get more out of the other two.

All of my other comments have been in jest. Except for the one about Took.

The released version is very shiny and oh so bright.

This video shows a comparison of Smells Like Teen Spirit between the Andy Wallace and Devonshire mix...

The Devonshire Mixes is missing Polly as it was recorded elsewhere.

Here's the whole album...

"When Pat, Krist and I sat down to go through those songs in a small rehearsal room with concrete walls, it fuckin’ sounded like Nirvana,” he told Kerrang!

“It was like being shot into outer space,” he said. “Being able to play that drum fill and break into the chorus…it’s spiritual, physical, emotional.”

He continued: “We would look at each other and smile, but the emotions would kind of go in waves, because there was someone missing – and you wish that you could still share those songs with Kurt.”

Novoselic said that he was “beaming” during the performance of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’

“I will cherish that moment for a long time because it was pretty special,” he said.

these days I'm far more likely to listen to songs from Bleach. The Nevermind production is just too slick, or something.

But for me quintessential Nirvana will always be unplugged in New York. That's the only album that makes my GOAT Top Ten A++ list

unplugged in NY > in utero > bleach > nevermind

I don't care if it's not a real album IT IS TO ME

COME AT ME, BITCH!

I mean, to experience Nirvana, you need to have listened to:
Bleach
Nevermind
Incesticide
In Utero
Unplugged
Live at the Banks of the Muddy...
Live at Reading
Live at Paramount
Live and Loud

The box set you can take or leave

I mean, that's all essential to have experienced the band. Arguing over order and preference is inconsequential

lies. you can know everything you need to know about nirvana just from unplugged, that's part of what makes it the quintessential Nirvana album.

How is that true? It's a good release/performance but as a stripped down "curiosity" album I don't see how it could ever be viewed as the only Nirvana album you'd ever need

I would say it is the least quintessential Nirvana album, but it is essential to a wholistic understanding of Nirvana

I think it's quintessential because it's the most accessible. Without all of the typical punk trappings Nirvana is a guy who writes good songs on guitar, a bassist and a drummer. A big part of why unplugged is quintessential, because it showcases what makes them great, which is the songs. The other part that makes it GOAT material is how the live set up allows the audience/listener to make connections between songs that Kurt (the songwriter) admired, and his own songwriting. There is nothing more complete, in the Nirvana catalogue. I think the more polish people put on Nirvana, the less like them it sounds, they weren't a polished group. Hearing all that stuff on an acoustic guitar, without distortion to fill in the gaps exposes how basic all of his guitar playing was and to me that just showcases how great the songwriting really was, that wasn't about his technical proficiency at all, he was truly a bard in the Bob Dylan/Woody Guthrie tradition. I hate anything too polished from Bob Dylan as well so that's my bias I guess. I rate Another Side of Bob Dylan above Blood on the Tracks.
