I can't understand how anyone concerned with making things better for minorties could actually sit down and think about Affirmative Action, even just in theory, and then support it. It forces me to think that most people probably don't think about it, because they don't want to, and don't have to.

Sorry, I have a limit for how much I can post in threads about Affimative Action and I just reached it. I'm getting itchy, and that means I have to leave before something bad happens.

Well I'm pretty much gonna stop after this because I'll only be repeating myself.

-AA is not perfect. But what is an alternative then? You can't just sit back and tell all these people "hey, stop complaining, it will all get better and equal eventually someday". And you can't just make it all equal with a snap of a finger or a snap of a correction in the education system or whatever. The only true way I see is to get more minorities and women into positions of power the quicker the better so that they can balance out the field. Don't white males make up a ridiculous percentage (in comparison to the regular population breakdown) of high management and powerful positions here? So if you guys advocate nothing, then I say AA is better than nothing.

-jczeroman, the free market & monopolies thing is better off as a brand new topic so that others can chime in, I don't have the will to explore those issues right now. maybe later.

peace.

But wait, explain to me how it will no longer be necessary once the playing field is deemed 'level'. How are these balances going to maintain themselves in the absence of any fundamental work on the core problems? The inequalities presented by AA are there to counter other inequalities, which are not going to magically disappear once certain quotas are met in colleges and the workplace

Please read again jczeroman's demographic/standard of living remarks. Also take into account that most CEOs etc are older men, from a time when men worked, women stayed home, etc. So, this will eventually correct itself. They do deserve their positions now though, because (whether or notit was a product of their times) they have the most experience and best job histories.
