The Rock explosion in the 60's/70's made way more of an impact. A lot of these hip guys are hot for a moment and then forgotten. Look at Eminem, no one gives a damn about him anymore. That homophobic bullshit is a disgrace.

Open your eyes ya sheeple

Doesn't mean white people can't enjoy the art form, but you have to live a certain lifestyle in order to authentically take part in the form.
you realize all the music you like was coopted from black americans as well right?

not comparing, hip hop is far more influential on a global scale than literally any other kind of music in history. ever.

that's not true at all. rock from the 60s might be bigger in your personal mythology but that's about where that truth ends

what exactly is this hip-hop thing you're referring to? Are you talking about rap or not? Cause obviously a lot of hip-hop stuff directly lifts shit from the Motown era and is not really even a new form of music.

Nope... Are you talking about rap or are you talking about hip-hop? There's a difference man.

Hell Black Eyed Peas and Rhiana are hip-hop.

Rap sucks, and there's only so much you can do with it as a form of music.

But a lot of rap is so watered down now, it's like rap mixed with bubblegum pop. It's embarrassing. Any mainstream rap always has the big pop-star singy chorus whereas the verses are all rap rhyming. It's incredibly formulaic and limiting.

There's no denying that black folks believe that it's THEIR music. It's a disgrace to them when they see white guys making a mockery of their art. It is disgraceful. That's why you'll never see any truly big white rappers. Even Eminem was always viewed as a total novelty and gimmick to real rap fans.

A lot of white blues players sucked too...That's why white guys like the Beatles, The Stones and even The Who took from it and morphed it into something different... Maybe that's what you can refer to hip-hop as... A pop form of music with rap like rhyming... But it's certainly not rap. That much we can agree on.

You can listen to the content of most rappers... It's all very baseline shallow stuff... Very confrontational type of angry stuff. Most of it fucking sucks to be honest.

I can copy and paste some content from the most respected rappers if you'd like... These guys make the Nickelback singer sound like Shakespeare

So only "urban folks" that "live a certain lifestyle" can rap authentically, but rap still sucks?

Glad we've cut away the gristle.

Summary of the thread:
FuzzyRoes thinks that black people live differently to white people and that some aspect of this distinction grants authenticity to their rap output, though it still sucks and the content would make even the work of a notoriously terrible and all-white rock band appear profoundly creative by comparison.

i'd love to hear you say that rock is for white people and black rock artists don't exist and are laughed at by white people. you know, since music has nothing to do with the culture you grow up in.

surely that's not what you think, because then you are saying black culture is shallow and stupid. surely, that's not what you mean? surely you can introspect to know that maybe you don't like rap because you don't identify with it and not because the people making it are talentless?

Are you nuts? Guys like Biz Markie and the other big rappers at the time were outraged that the Beastie Boys were making a mockery of their art-form. Eminem, was criticized by quite a few rappers too. He's known as the whitebread rap that white people can chuckle at.

You know, Eminem is the guy that talks about beating and killing his wife and makes juvenile jokes about gay people. He's the ultimate figure for all of the white bro guys... And you wonder why he's not respected in the larger rap circles?

I'm a white guy living out in a Canadian suberb. I'm not gonna "rap", that would be absurd and I'd look like a clown. Instead I'm gonna make a good ole alt-rock song about you

we've already had the convo about how rock music is a whitewashed and hijacked take on blues music, and in that context he was SO adamant that it's not and that rock is like some beautiful multicultural celebration or whatever. wonder what fuzzy would say to all the black musicians in the 50s and 60s who painfully watched white kids steal their music and culture? Isn't that what he is up in arms about here?

I don't argue that the white people ripped off the black innovators. Only difference is that you could do a lot more with that type of music...

And really, who are all these successful white people who have made it famous with their rap music? There really aint many.... So it's clear you're overestimating the impact.

You look at the rock stars who aped the black artists that came before them and the list is ENDLESS. Who are all these white rappers who made it big?

It's the most impactful type of music in the history, surely there must be a ton of white people and other races who have made it HUGE with their music! Instead it's just a laughable clown here and there.
