btw this is J Mascis' pedal board in 2012

He uses a lot of vintage amps on the records. A big reason for a lot of those pedals is to replicate the sounds of the different amps live. You listen to Corgan solo and he relies on all these flanger and echo effects and he tries too hard to "make it grunge"... Just listen to that solo in Cherub Rock... Totally trying to ape the feel of the Smells like Teen Spirit solo albeit in a much radder way. In the video clip for the song he's even tearing off the guitar strings as the solos playing.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, Corgan will try and ape whatever sound is cool or popular at the moment. Mascis is his own man and plays music from a place of passion and authenticity... That is why Mascis>>>>Cogan
