he's not exactly aged gracefully. is there a polite way to say that or should i just not have brought it up?

I actually thinks he looks really good for his age. He looks like a young old man, if that makes sense.

Hence the "born old" comment.

My classic fav by them is Living All Over Me, and for their new stuff I pick Beyond, which is one of the greatest comeback albums of all time. Imagine if Zeitgeist was as good as Beyond after the band had gone away for years. I would have flipped a fuckin shit.

In most ways, I agree with you. Billy has a magnetism though, for better or worse.

Mascis is probably a cooler person IRL and he has more indie cred, but Bill is a better guitarist, songwriter, and even singer

yeah, I didn't think of it that way. If you consider their entire career Mascis wins hands down.

I'll take pretty much any living artist over Billy Corgan nowadays.

Unless they are completely irredeemable pieces of poop.

Hell, I'll take unreleased material from dead artists first, oftentimes.

I dont understand the Dino Jr. "indie cred" when they play music that's shoegaze integrated into arena rock just like pumpkins

j mascis plays too many notes even on his softer songs to have it be like the shoegaze fuzz

yeah but it's hard fuzz

lol

just not gonna agree here. plus those vocals could never qualify as shoegaze. try fading out to THAT (<3 his terrible singing, though). i'll agree you can't understand what he says half the time like a typical shoegaze band.

Yeah I guess that's why I like SP immeasurably more

the softer vocals

some of the stuff Mascis talks about, themes about being a recluse and such seem my speed but it's just too hard rock for me

dino jr has so many albums that some are pretty soft though. not shoegaze noise soft but not hard rock like head bang-y

Bullshit... Complete and utter bullshit.

The last time Billy could compare to Mascis on the axe was during Gish and a bit on Siamese Dream... You know, during the days when Billy still had a passion. Churning out passionate guitar work takes soul, and Corgan hasn't displayed that he's "still got it" in ages. The fact that Billy can simply replicate his old parts in a live setting doesn't mean that he's still a good guitar player.... But really, any opinion is nothing but hearsay, the proof is in the released work... And Billys guitar skills have dried up longgggggggggggg ago.

You're certainly right! They are definitely one of the innovators of grunge... Probably more so than The Pixies in a lot of ways.... I don't think you'd ever have a Pearl Jam without a Dinosaur Jr... For better or worse.

Mascis really is a fantastic guitarist. I haven't seen him live though. Billy definitely excels in mixing and layering, etc. At least he did during the good albums. Dino Jr has more good albums, too, imo. But the good Pumpkins albums are better than the good Dino Jr albums.
