idk i grew up "secular jewish" and experienced some cultural stuff via my friends who were actually reform/conservative jews and had bar mitzvahs etc. so it can work i think

and yes orthodox judiasm is completely xenephobic bullshit and imo the rules people make to get around "not doing work" are ridiculous. so you can't press buttons so you just have the elevator going up and down to every floor? yeah ok you're not pressing the button, but you're violating the spirit of the law completely. i'm sure god had elevators in mind when he told you not to work on the sabbath.

I had a bat mitzvah, which technically isn't even supposed to be a thing in orthodoxy.

OMG the rules are crazy though. At my Aunt's house they have certain lights and fans etc they leave on or off before the Sabbath starts so they don't do the "work" of generating electricity. Once when I spent the weekend over there, my little cousin was showing off how he could turn the fan on (he was like 5) and no one remembered to turn it back off before the sundown. So my older cousins wound up spending half the night running up and down the stairs to get blankets over and over again (because Baltimore gets damn cold) which if you ask me is a hell of a lot more "work" than pulling the cord on the ceiling fan. Smh

One of my little cousin's first words was a racist term in yiddish that i'm not going to specify. Sickening.

I want Little One to have the Hebrew School experience because being yelled at by a 90 year old Mrs. Weinstein when you don't even want to be there builds character, and learning second languages improves cognitive function. But I don't believe in the religious parts they're going to teach her, like creationism and miracles and praying over action and cultural elitism and on and on. So I'm at an impasse. But there aren't even any synagogues close to where I live so I guess it's been decided for me that way. She hasn't even seen a rabbi to receive her Hebrew name yet but considering her English name it's obvious what it will be. Well, her first name, at least.
