Thumbs down THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY SHIT (spoilers)

Double post from my lj.

The sets were brilliant, the characters were extremely likeable, the literary tie-ins were awsome...

THE WRITING WAS COMPLETE AND TOTAL SHIT

My fiance tells me that I should just forgive the fact that Sean Connery jumped out of a car going 70 miles an hour and landed on his feet because the movie wasn't trying to make itself believable.

Tom Sawyer gets blown up in a building, there's no way he could have escaped, but shows up 5 seconds later, waves and says "I'm ok!" without a single scratch.

The immortal will die if he looks at his picture, so the vampire chic pins him to the wall and and holds it in front of him. And what does he do? HE LOOKS RIGHT AT IT.

Fucking A. That was only 2 of the many many many MANY problems with this movie. Ugh. I just... argh. But I liked it because I really liked the characters.

no really, I won't agree or disgree cos I haven't seen it yet, but I ain't really expecting much from it. the fact is, it isn't an adaption of the comic, they are just using the premise and building their own shitty story around the characters. If they filmed it around Alan Moore's (the comic writer's) plot then it could have been something special

but Charles Prepolec called it "the largest most huge cum bubble to be burst over malaysia in 12 centuries" and it also won a Dave award.

Probably true. All movies I've seen that were written without consulting the original writer usually suck. Case and point: Queen of the Damned.

Ugh.

That's some high acclaim though... you can't get much better than that. I love cum bubbles bursting!

I saw it while I was tripping...

I'm pretty sure I read this short story the movie was based on, but I'm not sure.

I think that it's awesome how they embodied the history of England and America. Sawyer really was the son of Connery, because Sawyer is the embodiment of America. Connery will always live in the minds of the Africans and never die because he is England and England enslaved the blacks.

And how can you not love the legend of the guy in the painting? Not that I've heard of that legend, but it's a cool concept, nonetheless.

I've never of the legend before this movie... and possible before the short story in question I've read... but okay, thanks. I'll keep that in mind, maybe I'll read it one day.

Here's what Kevin O'Neil (one of the comic's creators) said about the movie.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an alternate reality treatment of our source material. Alan and I got to play with many fictional icons and now the filmmakers get to play with them in their version – and what a wild and spectacular time they have!!!! Great makeup and special effects, lush production design and a wonderful cast. Tony Curran runs close to the creepiness of Hawley Griffin and Peta Wilson is smart and beautiful as Mina Harker and deserves a lot more screen time.

Sure I’d like to have seen our Nautilus on screen and Mina leading the group…but Sean Connery (our original model for Quatermain, by the way) is an icon playing and icon. Given the odds of anything coming close to the source in movies, our title has been treated with rare good taste.

Fans of the comic with open minds will really enjoy the film!!!

he sounds like he's REALLY trying hard to shovel the shit for this flick. "alternate reality treatment"? Good fuckin lord.

I thought the commercials for it we're pretty funny.

"The world is in trouble, the future is unstable, DANGER IS ABOUND! The world's destiny lies in the hands of one man... SEAN CONNERY!

It made me picture the Sean Connery from the SNL Celebrity Jeapardy skits trying to save the world with the help of a bunch of super hero's. Then there could be the one intelligent one who's always trying to talk sense into the other guys but Sean Connery's all like "Shut up bitch, I know what I'm doing", but of coarse he's wrong, and hilarity ensues. I think the film would have more potential if this was the basic premise.

I thought the concept was cool, yes... my problem was that, instead of closing his eyes, he looked straight at the damn thing and screamed "noooo!"

You'd have to force my eyes open to look at that thing if i were him.

That was the gayest ending ever. I expected a hand to bust out of the grave and grab the rifle, like when Freddy's claw jumped out of the ground to grab Jason's hockey mask in that one movie.

Yeah, he spends the whole movie looking for The Rapist.

Roger Eberts film review was pretty funny. Driving through the Streets of Venice is just too stupid for words.

Of course, I wasn't surprised this movie turned out to be garbage.
