Attack of the Friday Monsters is great. It's a short game and very story focused, but you really feel like you're in rural japan and it's a very cool little experience, with a very studio ghibli influenced style.

I got Shin Megami Tensei because I absolutely love Persona 4. It lacks the charm of persona and it's way harder in general but I still had a lot of fun collecting and fusing demons.
The story was mostly self contained from what I can tell, I never played any other shin megami tensei (apart from persona 4) and didn't feel I was missing out on much.
