Here's the thing with BPD:

It is hard to describe in symptoms. There is a distinct pattern that people with BPD tend to have in relationships with people, hobbies, and basically everything which is idealization and devaluation.

At first a person is the best person ever. They are perfect for you. They are the best therapist ever. They are the best manager ever. Etc etc.

Then within a relatively short amount of time, they are the most terrible therapist ever and you hate them. They play mind games with you, so you will play them back. You hate them and the hate makes you want to hurt yourself so you tell them you will and it is their fault. When they confront you, you run away and completely devalue them and never talk about it.

This is just a generic example.

I don't have time to explain this more right now.

Yes BPD is often used as a catch all diagnosis for "difficult clients" and is very often misdiagnosed IMO. However, there is a distinct syndrome that does exist. Again IMO.

Huh, not seeing flatulence in there. Must not affect me.

If you think you have BPD I would talk to a therapist about it and if their first instinct is to refer you to someone else you should take that as a sign they don't have the time and/or inclination to deal with complex cases.

yes she already determined you don't have it if she diagnosed you as having bipolar disorder.

I mean you could have both but an ethical therapist would tell you your diagnoses upfront, even if it's a highly stigmatized one like BPD.

When I was less stable I would have fit the diagnosis more, but a lot of the symptoms overlap with PTSD and dissociative disorders and I've had trauma specialists who know the difference. Generally it is easy to see in a therapeutic relationship because there are a lot of interpersonal signs that are common in therapy and that therapist see over and over in clients who have BPD.

i worked with a person with this, apparently

OMG I'M SO EXCITED THIS IS GONNA BE THE BEST AND I'M GOING TO BE THE BEST AND EVERYTHING IS THE BEST
and it's this really forced, over the top, like ohgod stop already (also the job was horrible) kind of cringe factor to it. early in the morning her forced, loud, braying laugh would be like the flame to my rage kettle

and then later she'd be over at your desk talking about all the mind games and conspiracies in place to prevent her from getting a raise

Yes and it's quite crazymaking when it's directed at you. I had someone fairly recently do it to me and it just left me speechless and I had to cut off contact. It sucks because we could talk about PTSD related things but she was too unstable to have a deep friendship with and when she accused me of gaslighting her I had to get out.

After all that's happened to me it's amazing that I only have some traits. I'm lucky that I somehow disconnected from reality with dissociation more than compensating with borderline coping mechanisms like splitting.

It's sad because the very thing they are afraid of (abandonment) is brought on by their symptoms and becomes self fulfilling. Unlike other cluster B personality disorders they mainly hurt themselves and it's very sad.

That being said there is treatment and those that survive to middle age tend to improve a lot.
