unfortunately not. i went to a filipino school for first grade, but then we moved to another campus, an international one, in which english was primarily used. the philippines was occupied by the us for 50-60 years and most people can speak their version of english "Pinglish" (Filipino English. they pronounce it 'pilipino' since pinoys traditionally can't pronounce an "f" sound).

As I was walking about my campus, I noticed that they are expanding an area on the south side. Parts of the barbwire-topped wall have been knocked down, and behind a screen of wall and trees there is construction going on. This is where the construction workers live. While my parents and I enjoy a clean apartment with wifi and a hot shower, these men live here:



they bathe out of a faucet. they cook over a fire. can you imagine cooking over a fire in a typhoon?

Sadly that looks really similar to how caretakers live in luxury resorts here. You usually have to traverse a small wood area and then you reach houses that are really not much more than a concrete floor and a haphazardly put together roof.

You'd think it would be easy to put together a decent bungalow residence with the leftover materials from the luxury bungalows...

Yes it is terrible. In Saudi Arabia poor Afghans and Bangladeshis that did construction lived in these huts made of concrete blocks roofed with tin. 120 degrees in the desert with the sun beating down turning those 'homes' into ovens.

I too grew up in a very small, insular religious group, with only tenuous links to another American religion often derided as a "cult" by mainstreamers (i.e. modern day sadducees/pharisees) so like a cult offshoot of a cult offshoot of another cult

When we were here my dad was a prof of theology and my mom was the registar.

sdas keep the sabbath, the old jewsih dietary laws, are very strict about health shit, were founding by a prophetess (ellen g white) and were initially associated with the kellogs whose cornflakes we have all enjoyed. there are about 16 million of them worldwide. they are somewhere between a cult and a church.

i will be going to silang tomorrow. that's the town outside the campus. but i hate taking pictures of the locals. i feel like such a fucking american tourist. i'll try tho. there's a cool old catholic church (oh no! the little horn of Daniel! the beast!) that i hope to see. there's also a lot of poverty.
