thanks for the recommendations. succulents definitely do not grow well in the available light here; they grow tall and sparse and scrawny.

definitely just looking for greenery, with ease being a close second -- i do like ferns and also plants that look nice hanging.

I would consider a Davallia. They're easy, green, and interesting because of the little "feet".

the instructions on one say to give it an icecube

Phals? Still blooming or no? Dry or wet substrate rn?

First: take them out of their substrate. It's guaranteed to be this trash peat stuff. They need to be in bark if they're phals. The best pots are cheap clay ones with drainage, because they're porous. These orchids are epiphytes and do not need to be as "rooted" as completely terrestial bound plants.

Next: water them every other day/every 3rd day in the winter. You should develop a rapport with the plant. Also mist. Sometimes I only mist for a while and they do fine. Imagine them in their natural habitat. Remember if it's cold, then cold and water logged is a death sentence, but so is extremely hot and dry (or dry and whatever).

Fertilize every so often. That will determine how often and how much they bloom

I use an all purpose fertilizer but even just that miracle grow foam will work. Something light. They can easily be burned.

Light: a window that doesn't get too much light but gets some. Sorry that is vague. Their leaves should be a deep, glossy green

Post pics of the roots and I will let you know if they have a chance. Many come home from the grocery store all rotten already :"(

Oh. Don't use ice cubes. That's a joke! Room temp water (tap fine) is sufficient

maybe somebody asked this before but whats a good starter houseplant that can thrive indoors with minimal sunlight. also what's a good plant that can survive on a balcony with a decent amount of daily sunlight but can survive changing weather conditions?

basically - what's a good primer on houseplants i can read somewhere if you don't care to explain such basic questions?

This is a very vague question but the general rule is "meet their needs".

A balcony that isn't closed off? What's the weather like? Because you could realistically grow anything unless I have more info.

What's your goal for the balcony and the houseplant?

I hate Dieffenbachia because they're toxic, ugly (imo), ubiquitous, and invasive in many places. They're also called dumb canes. So, that one. But it really has nothing in common with WPc. I just wanted to vent
