Boyhood - 9/10

Not quite sure what prompted me to watch other than Sunday night boredom and it's a Linklater film but I really enjoyed it. Probably would've resonated deeper with me if I were a parent.

Did anybody ever notice how Ethan Hawke is only ever convincing when portraying a bit of a dipshit?

I liked Boyhood a lot but I thought the concept was a bit better than the way it was executed. Still a cool and original movie.

I liked the domestic at the dinner table, but that's about it.

the concept of it is brilliant, immersive and innovative, but unfortunately it was artificially flavored with needless drama (especially the drunk/violent stepdad or whatever it was), etc.

what made that movie so beautiful was the focus on the small, unremarkable moments that make up a person's life, but the compulsion Linklater felt to still have it play out more like a standardized drama film was really shooting himself in the leg, i thought. still worth watching but it would have been a much more powerful film, had some restraint been demonstrated.

also, this song:

I downloaded the album and it sucks, maybe unsurprisingly.

Me too. And I wish we both could sing together arm in arm with broad healthy smiles alighting up our honest countenances. This is what I imagine we would sing:

Climb ever mtn
ford every stream
follow every rainbow (no homo)
Until u find ur dream!

Wait did I just post a "Last movie watched" in the "New Year 2017" thread?

I guess I really am a terrible boarder!

Yeah, I agree with this. It's what knocked the film down a peg for me. The father figures in particular all felt like one-dimensional, cardboard cliches.

But I guess if he was going for "world through a child's eyes" then I suppose it works (but is still kind of a cop-out).

I realized I forgot my scarf at the host of the party's house, so I went to get it, and while I was there, I apologized for being kinda weird and making an ass of myself. From her demeanour, she didn't seem annoyed or anything at all, it seemed more like she found it funny. I hope so. I don't want to be "that guy" that nobody wants around.

Hang out with different kinds of people. let them introduce you to things you wouldn't have otherwise done.

Like anything else it's a matter of balance I suppose, and wanting to try new stuff for the right reasons as opposed to because you think it will make you cool or part of the right crowd or whatever. You just also don't want to be the guy whose ideas about himself cement at 21 and never evolve.
Yeah, I don't tend to make "New Year's resolutions," but I do think I will make an effort to be more social and talk to more people and hang out with people more. Like, people from my classes, and people I haven't talked to for a while but still like.

I'm pretty much always telling myself that I'm going to get to work on completing ideas I've had for music, short stories, comics, screenplays, etc., but I never do. It just seems so daunting.

Fuck man, I've been that guy so many times in my past. Been doing a good job of not doing it in the past few years though. But if you're around buddies, no one really minds though. It's what friends are for.

I do have to admit though, dropping LSD by yourself at a party where no one else is doing it is some crazy shit man! I probably would have stumbled out as soon as it kicked in.

i trust that before doing so, Disco has thoroughly checked the premises for the lack of presence of any Gamecubes.

i just don't like the sound of my own voice though, most of the time. maybe it's a confidense issue. it comes and goes in periods i guess. right now i'm just not really liking anything i sing. i just wish i had an inherently great sounding voice, like koz, or jeff buckley (aiming low lol), or devin, or ...

i clicked that. wow, i hadn't listened to any corgan in ages, and suddenly the jarring fracture between his SD era singing and his technical, affectatious singing of now was just... gah.

i need to post some awesome corgan to alleviate the pain and help me forget

Ethan Hawke was good in sinister. He pulled off the drunk writer who gets obsessed with murder tapes pretty well.

God that movie terrified me

Not as much as this recent Billy Corgan video, that is Lovecraftian in nature.
