so today i gave raincheck to a lady that didn't believe me that our apple sauce that was out of stock was regularly priced at 1.69. the item had a sign on it comparing the price to Mott's apple sauce. she insisted it was on sale. i finally gave up and gave her a raincheck. i asked her how many she wants but it doesn't matter but she says five so i write five. then she says "it doesn't say unsweetened" so i tell her she can get any one she wants and she starts to get upset again so i write "unsweetened"

yesterday a guy came to return some hot dog rolls that were like 2/3 mold at this point and a pie of some sort (honestly have no idea), proceeds to tell me how he doesn't understand how they went bad he didn't even open them. the pie's sell by date is 11/19 and it is full of small maggots. i apologize and give him store credit for both items.

i had some doozies this week. let's see. some lady comes up to the counter asking if our store manager is there i say yes, she's like oh ok i talked to him i had to call customer care the other day because of a problem but i talked to the store manager and he told me to come to you and you'd take care of me. okay, lady. she proceeds to pull out several cupboard's worth of condiments and spices and 5 $20 skincare products. she's all smoozy whatever so i say hang on and go into the back and call the store manager and i'm like this lady says she talked to you she has these products and other stuff it's at least $150 and he says no i didn't talk to her so i ask him to come up there. so he comes up and he's like "can i help you?" and she proceeds to spin the slickest bullshit nonsense story ever about how she shops for all kinds of people and they told her to talk to him (she just told me she already talked to him but is now saying customer care said to talk to him) and that someone else who worked there with a very vague description denied her return the other day and we should really talk to her about it. so... we take it all back and a bit later i go to the back office where my store manager is finding the transaction to print and send to some loss prevention department and he's like she was so full of shit etc you can tell when people have had a lot of practice etc etc i mean we all knew she was full of shit, she knew she was full of shit, yet she got $170 store credit for stolen shit and stuff she probably took from friends or something i just can't

The first two things, I can understand, because even when the customer is clearly an idiot, losing a few bucks to them in order to keep a customer happy so that they buy more shit later instead of finding somewhere else to shop makes sense.

The last thing, though... I don't get the manager's call. The store gains nothing from capitulating to obvious scammers. It's like... what?

the problem is that my chain of stores gives people the benefit of the doubt (and clearly builds it in to the price of items) because it's better to let scammers through than deny one legit person. however, when it goes to this ridiculous degree no i don't understand it. basically the managers know corporate will hand them their balls if this person complains to them and they don't have an air tight reason for denying them. such as, watching them steal the items or having a report of someone stealing them from another store, etc. so people get more and more bold, until eventually there are enough reports to stop them. then they move on to another store or whatever and rinse and repeat

people do it all the time with stuff that's like 30-50 bucks and i won't even call a manager anymore, i just give it to them. but 170? bitch please, she was trying so hard to make it seem like it was ok and she already talked to management etc and even i was like ok she needs confrontation of some sort this is fucked up and believe me that takes a lot, i took a maggot filled unrecognizable pie back today without hesitation okay

yeah, to reiterate myosis' point, you don't have to work to create cutesy moments or situations or whatever. If the two of you click, that stuff will happen naturally and in less odd ways than can I tie your shoes for you. I know it sounds very trite but just be natural and try to shut off the second guessing. Don't overthink shit you want to say or do on the date, just go, you know? You're really sharp and clever and you clearly come up with funny things to say on the fly here. You can do the same IRL and I guarantee it will come off better than a line or gesture you had to plan out.

I'm not sure if the policy is the same in every jurisdiction, but I hear that in a lot of places, you can't accuse somebody of shoplifting until they've actually left the premises with unpaid merchandise. Like, they can stuff shit into their pockets, and it doesn't matter until they've left the store. Or open a can of tuna and just eat it, and so long as they pay for it before leaving, it's fine. If somebody gets accused of shoplifting without being caught red-handed, the store gets in trouble for accusing.

Not 100% sure if this is true or not, just something I've heard. I have no idea how it works at my store.

I don't think it's illegal or anything or the store can get in legal trouble, however when we know someone is shoplifting we usually use a show of 'force' so to speak, we'll get all the managers on the front end, one by the door, etc and the person almost always drops the shit and just leaves at that point. If we have an LP person in the store and they let us know what's going on we will do the same thing but more discreetly and if they leave with the stuff the LP guy or a management person will chase their asses down, however they won't restrain them so if they just drop the shit and run they will get away. If they do get caught and don't run and give up, they bring them into the back office, call the police to arrest them rarely but usually either just document the incident and tell them not to come back or have the cops trespass them. So yeah we just intimidate them usually. If we know you're taking shit you're not gonna get away with it, but if no one saw you and we only suspect you can walk out with no one bothering you but you will know we know

Yeah, I probably shouldn't try hard to create "moments" like that. I dunno, the kneel-down-and-tie-shoe idea was to try to provide a coquettish hint. But that would probably be weird without already having clear physical signals.

I do think that I've got to work on being more comfortable so I can just be myself and talk the way I talk with friends and stuff. Come to think of it, I haven't been all that "funny" around her. Around people I'm more comfortable with, like sisters or some of my coworkers, I use much of the same humour I use here, but I don't think I've really shown her that side yet because I've been to set on being polite and nice and friendly that I've forgotten to have an actual personality. Yeah, I lost just over $2000. The police put out a warrant for his arrest, but they haven't caught him yet. From what I've heard, he shouldn't be too hard to find, he frequents certain places, and he's known to the police, but I'm guessing the police just don't care about putting resources toward pro-actively pursuing him, and they are just like "well, when we come into contact with him again, which we probably will, we'll arrest him then."

I actually ran into him again. Saw him getting out of a taxi in the 7/11 parking lot near the bus stop he first approached me at. I went in the store before he could see me and waited for him and dialed the police. He didn't see me at first, but I just offered him a cold "hello." He recognized me, but started talking to me almost as if he hadn't screwed me over, trying to tell me about how he had recently had a stroke or some shit (probably trying to play on my sympathy, but I have none left for him). I just walked away to grab the license plate of his taxi (looks like he was just stopping at the store, and was going to get back into the same taxi) so that I could give the info to the police.

The constable who answered the call said they'd send someone out to serve the warrant against him, but I never heard back from the police. Immediately after calling the constable, I emailed the constable I had originally filed the report with just to let him know about the development. When I finally got a response days later, he just said that it looks like the warrant still hasn't been served against the guy, so I'm guessing that the police either didn't send anybody, or didn't send anybody quickly enough to catch him. I mean, if they had actually given a shit, it would had been easy, because they had the license plate and company of the taxi driver. All they had to do was contact that person, and ask where he dropped the scammer off, and they probably could had found him within the day. I think it's just not a priority for them, and they're just kinda "we'll get to it when we get to it."

Kinda annoying. There is enough evidence against the guy that it probably wouldn't even have to go to court, he'd just plea bargain and get sentenced pretty quickly, not taking up to many legal-system resources and not requiring me to be subpoenaed. I know I'll never get the money back even if he's caught because he's probably penniless, but I just want the law to catch up with him so that he doesn't target more people. Not everybody is as stupid as I am, but there are probably a lot of elderly, vulnerable people he could take advantage of.
