You would think this is meant to be ironic, but it was posted by an actual conspiracy-theory page and shared by a conspiracy-theory-believing Facebook friend I have.



Although, since most pages on Facebook just re-post other people's content without proper attribution, it's likely that the comical intent of whoever created the image was lost on the people that later put it on their own page.

His coinage of the word "meme" was an analogy with genes. Just as biological traits that are better suited to the environment are more likely to be passed on and undergo further mutation, ideas and thoughts that are more "fit" get passed on from person to person, and get altered along the way.

As a metaphor, sure, it fits and is poetic. It works as nothing more than a metaphor, however. The mechanism that mediates the transfer and mutation of biological traits is not some abstract thing, it's the chromosome and its alleles. DNA packets, actual tangible things that exist in cells and split and have their molecules alter.

There is no analogous "unit" of cultural ideas. There are no "memes," in the Dawkinian sense.

Though many people recognize that this is no more than a useful metaphor, there is some really embarrassing actual "research" being conducted into memes, as if they are real. There is at least one journal of memetics, with articles by people bizarrely reifying this non-scientific concept, and who seem to be completely unaware that we already have far more useful frameworks for understanding the transmission and "mutation" of cultural ideas, namely anthropology, sociology, psychology, political science, etc. These things treat ideas as they actually are and don't pretend they are gene-like units of thought.

yeah, i know all that. Dawkins spoke for a while when he was here more specifically on Alleles. He sounded like he really wanted to spend two hours on it, but Julia Sweeney got him off of it and onto more general discussion topics. Kind of a bummer. I'd like to hear more on biology.
