Default Rugh McClanahan (of Golden Girls fame) in The Wickedest Witch

This was a 1989 30 minute Halloween special that aired on NBC and it only ever aired 1 time. It hasn't even been released on DVD or VHS or in any other format and it's seriously the best fucking thing ever. 80's cheese at it's finest.

An awesome blogger has recovered a recorded copy and posted it online. You gotta check it out

If you wanna read a little more about the lure of it, read this awesome review here:

I love Halloween, it's my favorite holiday by far, but never do anything special. I'll probably drink some beers, watch some horror movies (John Carpenter's Halloween is a must, naturally) and chill with the gf.

Really, the Halloween season is all about cramming in as many horror movies as I can while taking in the fall beers (my favorite).

True that brother. I was just watching Cujo last night. So awesome.

I've been wondering how they did so many fantastic scenes with that dog but I don't really wanna google it. I'm assuming there was probably some instances of less than appropriate animal treatment involved.

Cujo was kind of bad but good at the same time. Ever see Man's Best Friend? It's like Cujo's b-movie lil brother.

Throughout the month of October, I watch nothing but horror films. Usually try to split the difference between stuff I already know and completely new stuff.

Made the gf sit through Cronenberg's The Fly and Child's Play, two personal favorites. She was a good sport.

I'm on a similar boat. It's hard to find a good halloween party here... last year I got lucky, but the crew who put that one together aren't really doing anything this year. It being on a monday after second round of voting doesn't help.

i love good horror films, but it's really hard for me to find ones that i like.

re: ones that are mainly psychological\nightmarish, rather than gross out\torture porn\jumpscare variety. The Fly seems pretty good actually, but i have a problem with bugs so that one i actually am kinda apprehensive about watching.

I like a ton of horror films from Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Evil Dead, Reanimator, Cannibal Holocaust to stuff like The Babadook, It Follows, Sinister.

Although for this halloween I decided to go more the cheesy tongue in cheek route with the movie selection, watched both Addams Family films, and will watch Beetlejuice over the weekend.

Cannibal Holocaust
this is one i refuse to watch. probably falls under the 'torture porn' category, plus what i heard was severe, real animal abuse and murder for absolutely no reason.

Cronenberg's The Fly (a remake of the '50s flick of the same name) doesn't have much to do with bugs. You just get to watch Jeff Goldblum rapidly deteriorate before Geena Davis' eyes. The whole thing is one big tragic metaphor for AIDS. Top-notch body horror with SPECTACULAR sfx. Can't recommend it enough, it's a top three film for me (horror or otherwise) but be prepared to be grossed out. And thoroughly depressed.

Yeah, another Re-Animator fan in the house!

And of course, I was raised on all the big tentpole franchises. Halloween, Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser etc.

Another favorite would be Carpenter's The Thing. So damn tense and, again, top-shelf special effects.

I saw it at a screening with the director present. He talked at length about the film and while he didn't make any excuses for the animal killing on film, he did say they ate some of the animals they killed.

Not that I think this makes it ok, mind you. But the film is interesting from a historical standpoint, mostly for being one the first if not the actual first found footage film.

I've seen The Fly so many times that Jeff Goldblum popping his finger like a pimple only elicits a giddy giggle from me at this point.

Another classic: Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. None of that Zack Snyder bullshit.

It's one of those flicks I always show to people and then watch for their reactions to certain scenes. So good.

The film, Cannibal Holocaust. It was as far as i'm aware novel in it's presentation at the time, the plot revolves around characters finding a movie reel of a young group of filmmakers who disappeared in the amazon jungle.
The director even told those actors to lay low for a year after the movie was released and people thought the deaths depicted in the movie reel within the film were real.

Or did you take issue with my use of the term historical? Film history, in this case ofc.
