one interesting thing about the question of if you die in a teleporter is that our minds are not just matter but memories and our personalities exist in electrical impulses jumping around in synapses, yes? currently there is no technology to break down and reasemble matter but there have been successful teleportations of energy waves across empty distances

The sort of "teleportation" we do isn't really the same as what's in sci-ci, where you take some object and transfer it somewhere else without it crossing the intermediate distance. Rather, it's using entanglement to transmit the state of a particle, rather than the particle itself. No matter moves, just information. What it is is using entanglement to put another particle arbitrarily far away in the same state as the first one.

Despite the fact that it's instant, it doesn't defy relativity, because we still can't use it for superluminous communication, as we need classical communication (which cannot exceed the speed of light) to send information about the state of the particle.

Then again, if the Star Trek teleporter does kill you and make a copy out of local matter, I guess that's more similar to actually existing teleportation than the conventional fictional version. Only way more complex, because we can pretty much only teleport the state of a particle at a time, while this device would teleport the state of every single particle in your body.

not sure if you have\had a cat, or know cat behavior, but that cat's body language screams extreme distress. they only act like that when they are really, really scared. and it's done for human amusement. that is abuse to me.

I can't say what the science of the future will be able to accomplish, but our current theories say that it's impossible on principle to accelerate mass to the speed of light, because doing so would require infinite energy and would give the object infinite mass.

If we were to work on some kind of fusion engine, we could probably get to ten per cent of the speed of light.

Matter/anti-matter annihilation would be one of the most efficient possible sources of energy, because it allows you to turn all the mass into usable energy. If we could harness this, we might get to half the speed of light. Unfortunately, we can only really generate a few anti-particles at a time right now in huge-ass expensive particle accelerators.

When it comes to far-out hypothetical tech, one way to reach very high speeds would be essentially creating a black hole and using it as an engine. Black holes, despite being "black," actually radiate a tiny amount of energy, according to Stephen Hawking. A black hole tiny enough would radiate a lot. This is called the Kugelblitz Drive.

There is one hypothetical method of FTL travel, though... though nothing can move through space faster than light, there's no law that says that points of space itself can't move away from each other faster than light (and in fact, as space is expanding, some points are). The Alcubierre Warp Drive is a hypothetical engine that takes advantage of this by expanding the amount of space behind a vehicle and contracting the amount of space in front of it, so that the space around the craft essentially carries the craft with it faster than light. One problem with this is that it would require a ring of negative energy density around the ship, and we don't even know if that's possible. We've never seen a thing with negative mass.

the issue of "uploading" your mind to a computer so you can live on after you die is the same thing. All it would be is a simulation of your mind. you would experience death and you would be dead. and there would be a digitized copy of your mind stuck in a computer.

the biggest problem with an object approaching light speed is its relative mass and the exponentially enormous amount of energy needed to get it there. It's not just that it takes more energy to go faster. It's that mass increases with velocity, which requires more energy.

Say you can get up to or nearly to light speed. How you gonna slow down? you'll need as much energy to slow as it took you to get to that speed to begin with.

if you could "warp" space and travel at light speed, you'd create what is effectively a shock wave that would annihilate anything anywhere near you when you dropped out of "warp speed."

pretty sure forrest gump says 'life is like' at least once in the movie, but even if not his mom DOES say 'life is like' when she first says it to him. and you hear people say 'is' over and over, not a big mystery to why everyone thinks of it that way

didn't watch mister rogers, too young for evel kinevil and star wars. but if people say "luke" over and over, people are not remembering the movie but remembering people always referring to it that way

only ones that really seem super weird are bernstain and febreze but febreeze is easily explainable since you say it 'breeze'. oh and charles schulzs is weird too. oscar mayer, i dont remember but meyer is a much more popular surname than mayer in general, not a big mystery

This weird "Mandela Effect" instance I had is that I could had sworn until recently that the comic-book character Rick Flag's name was actually "Rick Flagg." When I saw some headline refer to him as "Flag," I thought it was a journalistic error and went to double-check on Wikipedia. The entry sure enough was about Rick Flag, yet some of the sources in the footnotes did indeed have the "Flagg" spelling. Probably just people who made the same mistake I did, I prefer to jump to the conclusion that this is the result of an editorially-mandated reboot of real life.

Also, I used to always get the Full House theme song stuck in my head, despite the fact that I hadn't seen the show in years. One day I decided to go on a nostalgia trip and watch the opening credits, only to realize that the actual theme song wasn't anything like the song I had in my head at all. After watching the video, I was no longer able to recall how the song that had been in my head for years even went. I still can't remember it. Spooky.
