i got a couple books recently and read up on black and white photography. i've already shot 5 rolls since i found my SLR in storage. i'm waiting till i have some extra dough to buy the developing canister and chemicals to see how the negatives look. kind of excited to see how crappy my first photos are.

beautiful work, rairun. how much post processing did you do on those? what kinds of lenses?

Thanks!

1: Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens
2, 3 and 4: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
5: Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E

Processing was mostly just curves and white balance on Lightroom. I also applied a VSCO filter (can't remember which) on the last one as a starting point and worked from there.

About a half-hour drive west of Auckland, New Zealand. A little dangerous for swimming, but immensely popular nonetheless.

I don't even bother trying to picture a perfect world, because I don't think that perfection is something to strive for. I prefer imperfection. That's what makes things special. You know, things that change.

That's the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls (I think), but I believe the other picture was taken in Argentina?

The generally snowy situation occurred in the Andes, near to the Chilean-Argentinian border and within a pretty short distance of where Ethan Hawke had to eat latino rugby players in order to survive the aftermath of a plane crash. The watery one is on the Argentine side of the border with Brazil, where you can be drenched from head to toe with spray while being borderline deafened by the Garganta del Diablo waterfall that is semi-captured in the image.

I live in New Zealand, but circumstances have me visit that part of the world from time to time. I will next return in a couple of months.

Cool pics of touristy areas in this thread w/ no background info that would be neat, like geology/physical geography talk

Seneca Rocks, in eastern West Virginia, is a spiny ridge of Tuscarora sandstone and quartzite deposited 124 million years ago when the Appalachia region was submerged in an ocean. It is part of a bedrock unit stretching across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. After the prehistoric ocean receded, this peak was once 13,000 feet high. It has now been eroded to about 900 feet above the valley floor. There were several villages in the area that thrived as recently as 600 years ago. During WWII, soldiers were trained here in preparation for scaling mountains in Italy. Googling it reveals that it is sometimes considered the "only true peak" on the East Coast, apparently meaning it can only be reached by rock climbing. This is actually not true as you can basically walk right up to the top of the ridge, which is less than 10 feet wide at the top. There are signs warning you not to go up there but obviously I did.
